- "Whoever is operating this teleprompter is in big trouble," Trump quipped as attendees laughed.
President Donald Trump set his sights on a crew member Tuesday morning at the United Nations, as he paused a live, televised speech to threaten "big trouble" for a teleprompter operator.
After ABC cut away from its usual programming to broadcast a live shot of the speech, Trump opened his remarks at the UN General Assembly in New York City with a quip about the behind-the-scenes operations at the organization.
"I feel very happy to be up here with you," he said. "I can only say that whoever's operating this teleprompter is in big trouble."
The audience laughed at the quip, though Trump remained silent for several seconds, looking around the room before collecting himself and continuing.**

"Hello, Madam First Lady," he said, laughing as he looked toward Melania Trump in the audience. "Thank you very much for being here."
He then rattled off another list of titles, though it was unclear who, specifically, he spoke to.
"Madam President. Mr. Secretary General. First Lady of the United States. Distinguished delegates, ambassadors, and world leaders," he said.
Trump continued with the wide-ranging speech, before referencing the teleprompter once again as he lobbed criticisms at the United Nations as a whole.
"All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that on the way up stopped right in the middle," Trump alleged. "If the first lady wasn't in great shape, she would've fallen, but she's in great shape, we're both in good shape. We both stood, and then a teleprompter that didn't work."

He continued, "These are the two things that I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter. Thank you very much. And by the way, it's working now, it just went on."

Trump's words about the teleprompter operator come one week after he targeted ABC's Jonathan Karl during a press conference outside the White House.
The president made the threat after Karl's inquiry about Attorney General Pam Bondi's spoken intention to "go after hate speech" in the United States following the assassination of far-right, controversial conservative Charlie Kirk.

"We'll probably go after people like you because you treat me so unfairly. It's hate. You have a lot of hate in your heart," Trump told Karl, who questioned how appropriate it was for Trump to make such a statement to a member of the press.
Prior to ABC courting controversy over temporarily suspending talk show host Jimmy Kimmel following his comments about Kirk's alleged assassin, Trump's White House as well as various government officials have issued threatening statements about other pop culture figures, from the cohosts of *The View* to Rosie O'Donnell (whose citizenship he threatened to revoke).

In a statement to EW in July, the White House spoke about *The View* potentially being "pulled off the air" over liberal bias, while Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr has repeatedly spoken about the program, speculating in July that there may be "consequences" for the talk show, while he said last week that "it's worthwhile to have the FCC look into whether *The View* and some of the programs that you have still qualify as bona fide news programs" on the air.**
