Scarlett Johansson is recalling how working with the late Robert Redford made her want to become a director.

The Marvel alum, whose directorial debut *Eleanor the Great *hits theaters this week, revealed on Monday's episode of* The Late Show* that she knew that she wanted to become a filmmaker at a young age after watching Redford both star in and direct their 1998 drama, *The Horse Whisperer*. **

"I remember seeing him on the set," Johansson said of Redford, who died at 89 on Sept. 16. "He would have those intimate conversations with me, and then he would be coordinating a huge scene with our amazing people first A.D. Joe Reidy and Bob Richardson, our DP. And it was like, 'That job seems pretty interesting. I'd like to do that job someday.'"

Johansson was only 11 years old when Redford cast her to play Grace, a young girl who is severely traumatized after she and her horse Pilgrim are injured in a devastating horse riding accident. Seeking to help Grace and Pilgrim, Grace's mother gets in contact with a horse whisperer named Tom (Redford) who helps the pair begin to heal. **

The *Avengers* actress described Redford as "such a warm, kind, patient, generous wonderful man," adding, "He would take so much time with me every day. He was the director, so I got to work with him as an actor which was extraordinary, and he was so warm."

She continued, "We had a very special relationship in the film — the characters do — where he really actually therapizes my character. And he, in real life, had that type of persona. Just so calm and kind and patient. Every scene we'd do, he'd talk me through what my character had been through up until that point, and it was like he had all the time to do that."

BERLIN, GERMANY - JUNE 18: Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson attend the Berlin premiere of the movie "Jurassic World Rebirth" (Jurassic Park: Die Wiedergeburt) at Zoo Palast on June 18, 2025 in Berlin, Germany.

Johansson called working with Redford nothing short of a "transformative experience" for her. "I had a complete understanding of, 'Oh, this is actually a craft and something you get better at and understand more the more you put into it.' That was all because of Bob, Mr. Redford."**

A true Hollywood icon, Redford died at his Sundance, Utah, home "surrounded by those he loved" on Sept. 16, his publicist Cindi Berger confirmed in a statement to **. A cause of death was not disclosed. **

In the wake of his death, Johansson paid tribute to Redford and reflected on their time together filming *The Horse Whisperer* in a poignant statement to EW. **

"Bob taught me what acting could be, and it was from his generosity and patience that I was inspired to pursue the possibilities of the craft," Johansson said in part. "That same generosity and love of the art inspired Bob's creation of Sundance, a place where filmmakers learn from one another, inspire one another, and discover one another's talent."

She continued, "Bob, thank you for your belief in me and for your grace and guidance. You inspired so many artists, me included, to go deeper, to stay present, to push creative boundaries, and to explore further, and for that, we are forever grateful."
