Author Rick Riordan is finally sharing an update on when we'll get the last book in the current Percy Jackson trilogy.

"I am writing it," Riordan tells **. "It is not forgotten; however, there are a lot of projects, as you may have noticed, going on, and there have been some things that, simply because of the timeframe, had to jump in front of it. So that's why it's going to take longer than one year."

While the author has been hard at work adapting his original five-book series about Greek mythology into the Disney+ show (season 2 premieres Dec. 10, and season 3 is currently in production), he has continued to write new books in the Percy Jackson universe. He began a new trilogy in 2023 centered on Percy's senior year in high school and his quest to get three letters of recommendation for college, with *The Chalice of the Gods* (published in September 2023) and *Wrath of the Triple Goddess* (published in September 2024).

The third and final book will not follow the same release schedule, however, as Riordan pivots to continue the Nico di Angelo adventures instead, with *The Court of the Dead* (available Sept. 23) coming next. The author tells EW that fans will have to wait a bit longer to get the final book in the Percy Jackson Senior Year Adventures trilogy.

"I will try to be as speedy about finishing it as I can, but right now it's looking like the earliest is probably 2027 that'll come out," Riordan says. "And unfortunately, I can't really say anything about the other projects that necessitated that, but they're pretty exciting."

Percy's senior-year adventures are all about him completing three quests to get letters of recommendation from gods and goddesses to get into college so he can attend with his girlfriend, Annabeth. But don't hold your breath to actually *see* the two demigods enjoying the fruits of their labor, since the author doesn't plan to write any stories set in college.

"I'm going to be honest, I'm not sure that I'm the person to write that," Riordan says. "I consider myself a middle-grade writer — of course, because that's the age I taught, that's the age I know best, and that's kind of the sensibility that I have as a person and a writer. When you start getting into the high school years and beyond? I mean, yes, I went to high school, yes, I went to college, but I don't know that I am as effective either teaching that age group or writing about it."

Riordan doesn't believe he'll "do a good job with" writing stories about Percy and Annabeth attending college, despite knowing how much fans want to see the two heroes continue to grow up together.

"I don't want to mess it up," he adds. "I think my sweet spot is middle grade. So even though in the later books, they're high schoolers, I still try very consciously to make those books accessible to my core audience, which is still the middle-schoolers."

The author also doesn't plan to extend the current trilogy into another five-book series (he previously wrote two five-book sagas centered on Percy's quests).

"It was always meant to be three," Riordan says. "And really I only started thinking about that because at the time we were trying to shake things loose with Fox and Disney to get the TV show started. One of the things I did as kind of a carrot is I outlined three new Percy Jackson adventures and I said, 'If you would let us do a live-action Percy TV show, I would be available and interested in going back and writing new Percy Jackson books to promote the show.' As it turned out, I didn't need to do that — they were happy to make the show with or without them, but then I had three ideas outlined there. I was like, 'Well, I might as well write 'em now.'"

Riordan has extended his book universe to follow other characters aside from Percy. In addition to the current Nico series, there was also the *Trials of Apollo*, a completed five-book saga following the titular god as he was turned into a mortal as punishment by his father Zeus after the events of *The Heroes of Olympus*.

The author reveals he's considered giving other gods or goddesses the same treatment with their own series, but he doesn't have any "immediate plans" to do that.

"I can envision that," Riordan says. "That would be really funny. I will say that I feel very close to Apollo now after writing five books about him, and that was a ton of fun."

He's also considered telling more stories from the perspective of the other demigods from *The Heroes of Olympus.*

"I've thought about everything you can possibly imagine," Riordan says. "I really have enjoyed, for instance, writing the Nico di Angelo new books with Mark Oshiro; writing with Mark has helped me to understand Nico in a more authentic way, and it's yielded a book that is more than I could have done by myself. I would love to look at that for other characters and say, 'Who is someone from this background who really knows what this character might be going through and would put a more authentic spin on what they've been through?' That would be really fascinating to find other authors from those cultures who might want to adapt the characters."

All we need now is the Oracle of Delphi to reveal which character is next.
