- "A bit surreal," he said when asked how it felt.

New *Harry Potter *TV series star Dominic McLaughlin's transformation into the boy wizard was tinged with a bit of Hollywood magic, the young actor has revealed in a new interview.

The 11-year-old actor recently sat for an interview to promote the new British movie *Grow* — which also stars *Harry Potter* TV show star Nick Frost — during which he revealed what it felt like to put on Potter's signature styles while filming the upcoming HBO series.

"A bit surreal to be honest," McLaughlin responded when a BBC reporter asked what it felt like to step into the role on set.

McLaughlin elaborated, telling the outlet that he "was always a huge *Harry Potter* fan" when he was younger, and his fandom made him even more excited to play the iconic role.**

"It was the dream role, of course," he continued. "I'm thrilled to be able to be doing it."

McLaughlin was announced earlier this year as the forthcoming show's lead, taking the reins from *Harry Potter* film series star Daniel Radcliffe, who portrayed Harry on the big screen across eight films released between 2001 and 2011.

Radcliffe was joined in the films by Emma Watson as Hermione Granger and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, Harry's friends and fellow magical youths in attendance at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

On the show, McLaughlin's costars include Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron, with Frost portraying Hogwarts groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid (played by the late Robbie Coltrane in the films).

Other TV show cast members include John Lithgow as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, among others.**

While fan excitement remains high for the new series, others have criticized the development of the project amid *Harry Potter *book series author and TV show producer J.K. Rowling's controversial views on transgender people.

In particular, after joining the series cast, Essiedu joined several notable stars who signed an open letter of solidarity with the trans community after the U.K. Supreme Court ruled in April in favor of a Rowling-supported measure that sought to define womanhood on the grounds of biological sex. The author additionally publicly celebrated the ruling, which aimed to bar trans women from being legally defined as women via the Equality Act.

This led to fan speculation that Rowling might fire Essiedu from the project, though she stressed that she wouldn't seek to oust him.

"I don't have the power to sack an actor from the series," Rowling said on X. "I wouldn't exercise it if I did. I don't believe in taking away people's jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine."

HBO's Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of content at HBO and HBO Max, recently spoke to concerns that the new project would reflect Rowling's anti-trans views.

"*Harry Potter* is not being secretly infused with anything," he said on *The Town* podcast. "And she's entitled to those views. And I think people are pretty clear that she's entitled to them."
