Pierce Brosnan may have hung up his bow tie and golden gun in 2022, but he's happy to return to the world of James Bond for Denis Villeneuve.

In an interview with the Radio Times, the 72-year-old said that he could return to the 007 franchise as a "senior citizen" if the French-Canadian filmmaker tasked with helming the next film had "something up his sleeve."

"My wife Keely [Shaye Smith] and I have been listening to the drumbeat of expectation of who's going to be the next James Bond," Brosnan said. "There are many great candidates out there, and I'm sure they're going to make it a spectacle of delight."

Brosnan, who starred in four Bond films as the titular character from 1995's *GoldenEye* to 2002's *Die Another Day*, joked that while he doesn't think anyone wants to see "a craggy, 72-year-old Bond," the right script would pique his interest.

"If Villeneuve had something up his sleeve, I would look at it in a heartbeat," he added. "Why not? It's great entertainment. It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics... who knows?"

Daniel Craig reacts to Amazon MGM creative takeover of James Bond franchise

How the James Bond shift at Amazon could shake up (not stir) the long-running franchise

NO TIME TO DIE James Bond (Daniel Craig)

It would certainty bring a unique perspective to include an older Bond to a franchise that refreshes its lead every few films. Especially as the question remains on who should carry the torch after Daniel Craig donned his bowtie as Bond for the last time in 2021's *No Time to Die*.

With Craig's departure and Amazon MGM Studios taking over the new era of 007, casting a new James Bond is a tall order. No announcement has been made yet, but *Happy Valley* star James Norton, *Snowfall*'s Damson Idris, Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, Regé-Jean Page, Richard Madden, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have all been rumored or fan-cast at one point.

One thing is for sure: most people seem to be vying for the new Bond to remain in line with tradition and remain a man.

Brosnan and his *Thursday Murder Club* co-star, Dame Helen Mirren, voiced their opinion on whether the character should be a woman during a recent interview with *Saga* magazine.

"I'm such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy," Mirren declared. "You can't have a woman. It just doesn't work. James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else."

Mirren, who plays retired spy Elizabeth in *The Thursday Murder Club* opposite the former *Bond* actor, noted that her character is a "more realistic" portrayal of a spy. "So many women have worked in that world. She's a manifestation of a reality, that's for sure," Mirren told *Saga.* "But not so much fun as Bond!"

Brosnan echoed Mirren's sentiments, adding, "I'm so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character."

While the main star is still a question mark, Amazon MGM has tapped the director. In June, the company announced that Villeneuve will helm the next film and serve as an executive producer, alongside Tanya Lapointe. It was previously revealed that Amy Pascal and David Heyman will also serve as producers.

With Villeneuve on board, the search is now underway for a screenwriter, and eventually, the next face who'll have the license to kill.**
