When it debuted in 2007, Hulu was largely a place to catch up on NBCUniversal fare and occasionally check out a fun movie. In the intervening years, however, the service has become one of the most diverse and risk-averse streamers. Their wealth of back catalog titles is a force to be reckoned with (someone on the acquisitions team clearly has a love for obscure, classic cinema), but their originals have earned a degree of esteem, too.
Amongst Hulu's own excellent output (we're looking at you, *Rye Lane*), film festival streaming debuts (hello, *Sanctuary*), and modern favorites (*Anora*), the streamer genuinely has something for every mood and taste.

Anatomy of a Fall (2023)

Jehnny Beth as Marge Berger, Messi the dog as Snoop, Milo Machado-Graner as Daniel Maleski, and Sandra Hüller as Sandra Voyter in 'Anatomy of a Fall'.
Did she do it? This is the question at the heart of *Anatomy of a Fall*, Justine Triet's highly acclaimed French legal drama starring Sandra Hüller as Sandra, a writer who fights for her innocence in the death of her husband. The circumstances surrounding her husband falling out the window to his death are ambiguous: he may have been suicidal; he may have fallen on accident; she may have pushed him following a nasty argument.
Triet keeps you guessing as to the truth behind it all, and Hüller's performance is such that you're never quite sure, even by the end. The film won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival and earned five Oscar nominations, winning for Best Original Screenplay. —*Kevin Jacobsen***

Writer-director Sean Baker's fascination with sex work as a conduit for telling humanistic stories about capitalism, relationships, and the plight of the working class is brilliantly realized in *Anora*, his most acclaimed film to date. The genre-shifting dramedy stars Mikey Madison as Ani, a street-smart Brooklyn stripper who dives into a whirlwind romance with the pampered son of a Russian oligarch. After his family discovers that they got married, they hire stooges to put a stop to it. *Anora* won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Madison, who utterly transforms as a young woman whose Cinderella dreams are abruptly shattered as she is forced to come back down to reality. —*K.J.***

Natalie Portman as Nina Sayers in 'Black Swan'. Niko Tavernise/Fox Searchlight
At what point does dedication to one's craft become too much? Director Darren Aronofsky explores this (among other themes) in *Black Swan*, in which Natalie Portman portrays Nina, a sheltered ballerina whose drive to play the lead in a production of *Swan Lake* causes her to have a psychological breakdown. Nina soon finds herself behaving erratically, experiencing hallucinations, and awakening the darkness within herself.**** The film was a huge hit with critics and audiences when it was released in 2010, grossing $106 million domestically and scoring multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, with Portman winning Best Actress. As EW's critic writes, "*Black Swan* is lurid and voluptuous pulp fun, with a sensationalistic fairy-tale allure." All these years later, it's hard not to be enraptured by its blending of gothic horror and high art. —*K.J.*

One of the more unusual trends in recent years has been the proliferation of films and shows about the rise and fall of tech companies, from *The Dropout* to *Tetris* to *WeCrashed*. *BlackBerry*, about the movers and shakers behind the titular smartphone company, is one of the best within this subgenre as it narrows in on the egos and interpersonal drama that unfolds in entertaining fashion. Edward Norton as Pete Seeger and Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan in 'A Complete Unknown'.
Macall Polay/Searchlight Pictures
Music biopics have become relatively commonplace nowadays, often telling formulaic cradle-to-grave stories about humble beginnings, the big breakthrough, the struggle with fame, etc. This biopic about Bob Dylan feels refreshing by comparison, only focusing on the beginning of the folk legend's career until his divisive transition to electric guitar in the mid-1960s. Timothée Chalamet, in an Oscar-nominated performance, channels Dylan's mercurial personality with shocking accuracy, while the film captures the specific aura of the folk scene during one of its most crucial eras. —*K.J.*

Park Hae-il as Det. Jang Hae-jun and Tang Wei as Song Seo-rae in 'Decision to Leave'. Cannes Film Festival
Park Chan-wook is one of the world's best directors of psychological drama, from the twisted violence of *Oldboy* (2003) to the erotic thrills of *The Handmaiden* (2016). *Decision to Leave* sees him doing what he does best, telling a fascinating noir-inspired story of obsession and power dynamics. Park Hae-il stars as Hae-jun, a detective investigating the suspected murder of an older man, and his subsequent affair with the man's young widow, Seo-rae (Tang Wei).
Their evolving relationship soon complicates Hae-jun's case, as we question, in classic femme fatale fashion, whether Seo-rae is genuine or simply covering her tracks. "With surreal cinematic flourishes and breezy dollops of dark humor, Park builds a world where alliances are constantly shifting and nearly every moment is cause for reconsideration," writes EW's critic. —*K.J.***

Mark Jenkin, the British filmmaker who directed the similarly brilliant *Bait *(2019), helmed this experimental nightmare about a wildlife worker on the titular Cornish isle who begins to descend into madness under the specter of a long-ago shipwreck and a family tragedy. There are no easy answers in *Enys Men*, and it risks being outright frustrating, but Jenkin's masterful cinematography evokes the unsettling atmosphere of a lost piece of 1970s folk horror. *—Declan Gallagher*

Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones star in this full-throttle psychothriller in which the less you know about the plot, the more effective the experience will be. Shot with a particularly daring eye with an inflection of dark humor and a solid soundtrack, *Fresh* takes a premise that could be terribly unpleasant and turns it into a slick piece of popcorn entertainment.

How do you reckon with the notion that the shimmering industry you once thrived in is now showing signs of rust? For Shelly (Pamela Anderson), being a Vegas showgirl has defined her entire adult life, but with the imminent shuttering of the revue she's been in for three decades, she is forced to forge a rocky new path. Anderson brings a brittle vulnerability in this indie drama, which EW's critic praises as "a requiem for any woman who has ever been underestimated because of her beauty, her choices, or her art." While the story has a compelling scrappy underdog spirit, the main attraction is Anderson, who utilizes her bright eyes and megawatt charisma to tell a poignant tale of regret and resilience. —*K.J.***

Ever leave the TV on too long and accidentally stumble upon something truly off-the-wall frightening in the wee hours of the morning? That's the general vibe of this wickedly entertaining horror indie, which centers on a cursed episode of a late-night talk show from 1977. David Dastmalchian stars as Jack Delroy, an opportunistic host who invites a possessed girl and a child psychologist as his guests for the night in a desperate bid for ratings. Naturally, the night soon descends into mayhem. Sibling directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes evoke a bygone era with stunning verisimilitude; as EW's critic writes, "The slow-burn fallout blends occult conspiracies with human drama (plus creepy kids and '70s sideburns), and I adored every second of it." —*K.J.***

20th Century Studios
This smart little *Twilight Zone* riff stars Kaitlyn Dever as a young woman who is under siege in her isolated country home by a group of alien invaders. The script is witty while the general conceit is executed with panache. It's practically a silent film, one that judges its running time perfectly, introducing fresh, thrilling elements right up until the credits roll.
"It was a character thing where this person really wants a community and doesn't think she's deserving of one," writer-director Brian Duffield told EW of the decision to make the film dialogue-free. "It felt like that device just amplified her character." *—D.G.*

Director Steven Soderbergh embraces the concept of horror movies having a special voyeuristic appeal in this chilling ghost story. The film centers on a somewhat dysfunctional family that has recently moved into a new house, which they discover is inhabited by a mysterious presence. It's hard to make an odd-couple comedy feel fresh these days, but writer-director Jesse Eisenberg does so with this earnestly human dramedy. Eisenberg also stars alongside Kieran Culkin as cousins who grew apart upon reaching adulthood and reunite to take a guided tour through Poland as a tribute to their late grandmother. Eisenberg's David is a nebbish family man while Culkin's Benji is an outgoing whirlwind of chaos, though both find nuance within their usual screen personas. *A Real Pain*, which EW's critic calls "both hilarious and devastatingly real," earned an Oscar win for Culkin's performance and a nomination for Eisenberg's original script. —*K.J.*

It is alarmingly common for people to look the other way in the face of injustice, as explored in this engrossing Irish drama. Adapted from the acclaimed Claire Keegan novella of the same name, *Small Things Like These* is set in a small Irish town in 1985, where a local convent houses "fallen" women and subjects them to unspeakable abuse. Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy), a coal merchant and family man, helps a teenage girl who has faced such abuse and tries to expose the truth — but this proves far easier said than done. Tom Cruise, eat your heart out: June Squibb is the action hero of the year. The Oscar-nominated nonagenarian took on her first leading role in her decades-long career for this hilarious, heartfelt indie dramedy. Squibb plays Thelma Post, a grandmother who gets duped by a phone scammer, discovers her mistake, and makes a perilous journey through the streets of Los Angeles to track down the culprit. Though plenty of comedy is mined from the setup, the film also tackles heavier themes like aging and grief with a sensitive touch, thanks in part to Squibb's smart performance.
As EW's critic writes, "A lesser actress could've turned Thelma into a retirement home caricature, but Squibb, of course, brings a thoughtful and sweet nuance to her heroine." —*K.J.***

Ruben Östlund's Oscar-nominated masterwork, about the clients and crew of a lavish yacht, juggles a lot of plates with great aplomb. In the center of it all is Dolly de Leon, who put up a noble fight come awards season for her role as crew member turned top dog, Abigail. It's not subtle, but it is a rousing existential class comedy. "The movie is a bona-fide trip," EW's critic writes, "not the funhouse mirror we need for these ridiculous times, maybe, but one we deserve. *—D.G.*
