- *The Strangers: Chapter 2* takes Maya Lucas all over the town of Venus, Ore.

- Get a look at the danger Maya faces in our exclusive clip of a terrifying scene set in a hospital morgue.

- Madelaine Petsch teases how Maya's fight for survival sets up the final chapter of the trilogy.**

Maya Lucas (Madelaine Petsch) is not out of trouble. Not by a long shot.

After narrowly surviving a group of masked killers at the end of *The Strangers*, she wakes up in the hospital at the beginning of *The Strangers: Chapter 2*, only to learn she is still being hunted. "[Maya's] in the hospital, recovering from her stab injury, and very quickly realizes that unfortunately, the Strangers have infiltrated the hospital and she has to run for her life again," Petsch tells ** for our Fall Movie Preview.

You can see a heart-pounding sneak peek at what comes next in an exclusive clip from the film above. "We're in [the hospital] for about 15 to 20 minutes of the film," Petsch explains. "She's pretty savvy, I have to say, with the things she chooses to do, and she's trying to take it to the next level in terms of her safety." In the clip, Maya tries to escape the Strangers by hiding in the hospital's morgue, climbing into a cadaver storage rack.

You'll need to wait until the film hits theaters on Sept. 26 to see how the rest of the scene plays out, but it's not much of a spoiler to say Maya's role in the film continues past the opening scene — especially considering we know she filmed all three movies in director Renny Harlin's planned trilogy at the same time.

However, unlike the first installment, in which a mysterious masked trio torments Maya and her boyfriend Ryan (Froy Gutierrez) in a remote vacation home, the sequel operates on a larger scale. "This is very expansive, almost encompassing the entirety of Venus," she says of the small town in Oregon where *Chapter 2* takes place.

An expanded world means more new characters, including Gabriel Basso's mysterious Gregory and Maya's nurse, Danica (Brooke Lena Johnson). "You spend a lot of time with Danica in this film, and you spend time in the world around her," Petsch says. "The world around [Maya] in Venus is so rich with flavor. You really meet 15 or so townfolk and get scoops behind each of them to see how truly messed up the town is."

Fans will also finally get a better sense of who the Strangers are this time around, after the first film offered little insight into their identities or motivations. While never named in the film, the three intruders are listed in the credits as Dollface (Olivia Kreutzova), Pin-Up Girl (Letizia Fabbri), and Scarecrow (Matúš Lajčák). The only clue we get to their motives is revealed in a chilling exchange that first appeared, with a slightly altered phrasing, in the original 2008 version of *The Strangers *starring Liv Tyler. When Maya asks, "Why are you doing this to us?" one of the Strangers chillingly responds, "Because you were here." (In the Tyler version, which served as the inspiration for Harlin's remake, the line goes: "Because you were home.")

"That's what makes the IP so scary, is that they are really just real people with masks on who want to kill you, and real people have personalities," Petsch explains. The actress sees Pin-Up as playful with a terrifying joie de vivre, while Scarecrow has a more commanding presence that makes it clear that he is the leader. Dollface is the more reserved of the three, which Petsch says gives her more humanity than the others.

In addition to diving deeper into the Strangers' personalities, the sequel also spends more time examining Maya's psyche and the impact this ordeal has had on her. "We help the audience see that by showing a lot of her point of view and her questioning reality because she's so exhausted mentally, emotionally, and physically," Petsch explains, adding, "She's starting to lose her grip on reality."**

The film not only examines how far she will go to survive, but also whether she even *wants* to survive amid the horrors she continues to experience.

"She is learning what fight or flight is and deciding if she wants to stay alive or not," Petsch says. "We wanted to give our character that time and focus on character-driven horror. When all three come out and people watch them, they'll get that satisfaction they're looking for."

Looking ahead, the actress teases that Maya's ordeals could be culminating in a revenge arc. "How do you turn a person into a killer?" she poses.

While her character might be going through hell, Petsch still managed to have fun playing her. Speaking of one of her favorite scenes in the film, she praises "the hair and makeup department" for creating "a practical wound that bleeds." She adds, "It's so impressive when you look at it, and I can't believe that it's not effects. The world needs to know that."

Those "bad ass" effects help "motivate [Maya's] evolution into where she ends up in the third movie," she explains.

Still, Maya has a lot of fighting to do to get there. Whether she'll be the same person by the end of the trilogy remains to be seen.**
