- Charlie Sheen and Chuck Lorre first worked together on *Two and a Half Men, *which was co-created by Lorre.

- The two had a public fallout in 2011 when Sheen clashed with Lorre and was fired from the show.

- They feuded for years, but have since buried the hatchet.

At its peak, *Two and a Half Men* was one of the biggest shows on television. Not only did the CBS sitcom make Charlie Sheen the highest-paid actor on TV, but it also helped to cement Chuck Lorre as a creative powerhouse, setting the stage for future hits from the creator like *The Big Bang Theory* and *Mom*.

The duo seemed unstoppable, but things were far from perfect. As Sheen's personal life and struggles with addiction intensified, so did the tensions between him and Lorre.

"I considered Charlie a friend, not just a colleague at work," Lorre says in *aka Charlie Sheen*, the new Netflix documentary about the actor's life. "But there was fear that tragedy was right around the corner."

What began as a wildly successful creative partnership between Sheen and Lorre eventually turned into an ugly feud. Here's a look back at how it all went down and how they finally found a way to move forward.

What did Charlie Sheen say about Chuck Lorre?

In 2011, amid his struggles with substance abuse, Sheen lashed out at Lorre with a series of erratic public rants aimed squarely at the *Two and a Half Men *creator.

Sheen called Lorre a "clown" and "a stupid, stupid little man," and even directed anti-Semitic insults at his old boss. The situation escalated, and in March of that year, CBS and Warner Bros. officially fired Sheen from the show.

The fallout didn't end there. Sheen filed a $100 million wrongful termination lawsuit against both Lorre and Warner Bros. Television, accusing Lorre of "humiliating, harassing, and disparaging" him. Lorre's attorney, Howard Weitzman, dismissed the suit as pure "fantasy."

By September, the case was settled.

In the aftermath of Sheen's public meltdown, Lorre opened up about the emotional toll it took on him. In a 2011 interview with *TV Guide* (via **), Lorre said Sheen's downward spiral "broke my heart."

"I thought we were on the same road together," he shared. "It was a painful year. I'll be sorting it out for a long time."

According to Lorre, he even offered to quit *Two and a Half Men* for Sheen's sake, but CBS seemingly stood by him instead. Still, working alongside Sheen near the end was difficult. "It was heartbreaking to be around here last year," he said.

But problems had been simmering for a while. In *aka Charlie Sheen*, Lorre admits that he first considered walking away from the show in 2009, after Sheen was arrested for an altercation with then-wife Brooke Mueller. "That was the first time I thought of leaving because I didn't want to enable violence, and there was violence involved in that," he says.

Sheen recalled being asked by Lorre to gather the cast and crew and apologize, which he refused to do. Eventually, CBS stepped in. As Lorre told *TV Guide*, the network made "a moral decision as opposed to a financial one" to remove Sheen from the show.

"But people were really frightened," Lorre said of that time, "they were signing off on what could have had devastating consequences. This was not a game. This was drug addiction writ large. This was big-time cocaine and in his own words, an 'epic drug run' that could have ended with either his death or someone else's."

Not all of Lorre's criticism came via interviews, though. He often used his signature end-of-episode vanity cards to subtly (or not so subtly) reference the fallout with Sheen. Following the 2015 series finale, a vanity card found Lorre addressing Sheen's refusal to appear. The creator even appeared on screen himself at the end of the episode. "Winning," is all he says, a pointed nod to Sheen's infamous catchphrase.

Yes, Sheen made an effort to squash his feud with Lorre. In 2013, he fired off a post on Twitter (now X) saying he wanted to "make amends" in person. The actor wrote, "hey Chuck. I have an idea that u need to hear after I make amends to you and yours. which I will do in person."

However, nothing came of it, and the two remained estranged.**

Despite the ongoing tension, Lorre praised Sheen during a 2015 press conference. "It would be inappropriate to not acknowledge the extraordinary success we had with Charlie and how grateful I am, we all are, to his contributions," he said at the time. "And there's nothing but great feelings for the eight-and-a-half years we worked together."

Since his firing and the public feud, Sheen has gotten sober and even expressed regret over how he handled the situation, admitting to Yahoo! Entertainment in 2021 that his actions were "desperately juvenile."

In November 2023, Sheen and Lorre reunited on Lorre's HBO Max comedy series *Bookie. *

When Lorre and co-creator Nick Bakay decided they needed a "real-life Hollywood star" to play a high roller, Lorre immediately thought of Sheen. "It should be Charlie," Lorre told *Variety*. "I remember Charlie was very much engaged in sports betting and he would tell me stories about it all the time. You know, when things were good."

Meeting for the first time in over a decade, Lorre admitted he was "nervous" but quickly remembered their past friendship. "And that friendship just suddenly seemed to be there again," he said. "I don't want to be too mawkish about it, but it was healing. And he was also totally game to make fun of himself. When he came to the table read of that episode, I walked up, and we hugged. It was just great."

Ahead of *Bookie *season 2, Lorre told PEOPLE that Sheen is "the real deal. It was really meaningful to work again, and have fun."

In *aka Charlie Sheen*, Sheen reflected on their feud and his termination, confessing that much of his anger stemmed from personal struggles. "What I've come to really embrace in all this time since… so much of the anger in my personal life, and the anger and the frustration of two failed marriages and four new children and not finding any real success in those pursuits, I decided to take out on Chuck."
