The magical hijinks of *Now You See Me: Now You Don't *work almost too well because Jesse Eisenberg didn't initially understand the upcoming movie's big surprise.

"There is a genuinely brilliant, incredibly effective twist in the movie," Eisenberg tells **. "I don't want to give away anything, but the twist happens because of some really great acting. It will blow your mind. Apparently people go nuts for the ending in test screenings, but I am like an idiot when it comes to plot."

The star — who returns for the third installment in the popular franchise along with veterans Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Mark Ruffalo, and Morgan Freeman — had to ask director Ruben Fleischer (*Uncharted*, *Venom*) to explain that unexpected finale to him. By the time they actually shot the sequence, it was clear to him.

"God, audiences must be really, really sharp, or I am an idiot," the actor, who recently directed Kieran Culkin to his Oscar-winning performance in *A Real Pain*, remarks. "I read the script three times, and I was totally wrong. People not only understand it but love it."

The card-slinging heist three-quel reunites the original Four Horsemen magicians with a trio of young newcomers (Ariana Greenblatt, Dominic Sessa, Justice Smith) to steal a valuable "heart diamond" from an evil heiress (Rosamund Pike). It's the first time all the Horsemen will appear onscreen together since the first movie came out in 2013. Fisher sat out 2016's *Now You See Me 2, *which subbed in* *Lizzy Caplan.

"When we heard they were doing a third one, we all jumped at it," Eisenberg says. "The four of us just have such a great time together. The cast in this one is really magnificent, and there are some great surprise appearances, too."

Does that mean Caplan will also return after filling in for Fisher last time? "I'll put it this way," Eisenberg hedges. "The surprise appearances in the movie are just as much fun as they are surprising. These are not boring appearances. It's the best kind of shock because it's a surprise but also done in such an unusual way."

Now You See Me

When the third movie begins, the Four Horsemen are broken up, and J. Daniel Atlas recruits a trio of younger magicians for help with an "impossible" trick — and to act "condescending" towards them, one of his favorite hobbies. But when they get into trouble, the other three Horsemen suddenly appear to save them, finally bringing all four back together.

While Eisenberg can't reveal what's happened to break up the Horsemen since the last movie, he does hint that it has something to do with Ruffalo's character, Dylan. "This new adventure brings us back together in a really nice way," he says. "The seven of us, as a team, work to take down this South African billionaire diamond heiress who allows all the world's worst people to launder money."

Eisenberg praises new cast member Pike for her "amazing" portrayal of the villain: "She's just terrifying. Really creepy and funny."

The long nine-year wait in between the second and third installments was not intentional. According to Eisenberg, they always wanted to make another and spoke about different kinds of stories for years. He didn't know whether a new sequel would include his wise-cracking illusionist J. Daniel Atlas or if a younger generation of characters would pick up the torch.

Eisenberg always hoped to play Atlas again, a role he describes as "the most fun acting experience" of his career. "Normally, I am playing characters that are just emotionally tortured or deeply uncomfortable with themselves, so it is a complete joy and thrill for me to play this kind of character in this kind of movie," he says. "I was over the moon when I heard that this was the take on [the third entry], where the original Horsemen would be in the whole movie."

That feels like the greatest trick of all.

*Now You See Me: Now You Don't* magically appears in theaters Nov. 14.
