Tony-winning actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson is still haunted by the theater-related puzzle that he got wrong on* Celebrity Wheel of Fortune*. **

The* Modern Family* alum, 49, appeared on the June 10 episode of the hit game show, where he competed against fellow theater icons Renée Elise Goldsberry and Bernadette Peters to raise funds for charity. However, Ferguson lost out on the chance to earn some extra prize money when he flubbed a *Hamilton*-related song question. **

The correct answer was "I am not throwing away my shot," a lyric in "My Shot" from Lin-Manuel Miranda's 2015 Tony-winning musical. Instead, Ferguson guessed, "I am not *taking* away my shot."

The actor attempted to set the record straight on the error during Wednesday's episode of* The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon*. "Listen," Ferguson began*.* "When you're at home on the comfort of your own couches everyone, it looks really easy!"**

In real life, however? It's a lot harder than it looks, with Ferguson noting that he got very "sweaty" and struggled with his dyslexia during the competition. **

Still, he maintained, the lyrical blunder had its own silver lining.**

"But the thing is, Renée Elise Goldsberry, who was in the original production of *Hamilton*, was the original Angelica, won a Tony Award for it, was also on that panel," Ferguson explained. "And realized she had not gotten the clue and she was killing herself."

It's also why he desperately wanted to be able to solve the puzzle before her. **

"She looked and me and she was like, 'I know what this is,' and I was like, 'Yeah, I know what it is too,'" he teased. "And so I was so excited to get it right and just be like, 'Haha!' And then I messed it up and it went to her and she got it."

So, in a way, he was *really* doing her a favor. He added, "I just was like, 'Look, I did it for you. I did it for you!'"

Goldsberry won the first of the two *Celebrity Wheel of Fortune* games that evening, earning a total of $120,450 for her chosen charity Twelve Days of Christmas, Inc. Ferguson took the second game, racking up $59,300 for No Kid Hungry by Share Our Strength.
