- *The Great British Bake Off* is a reality competition in which home cooks aim to be crowned "star baker" by a tough panel of judges.
- The series is currently in its 16th season.
- Past winners include John Whaite, Candice Brown, Nadiya Hussain, and Peter Sawkins.
The enticing scent of cakes, cookies, and cupcakes is in the air once again, as *The Great British Bake Off* has returned for another season.
For 15 years now, the cozy reality competition — known as *The Great British Baking Show* in the U.S. and Canada — has seen amateur bakers whip up intricate, decadent, and sometimes gravity-defying desserts for a tough panel of judges, including Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.
Winners of the series have gone on to great success, publishing cookbooks and opening their own bakehouses and restaurants. But some have stretched their fame even further, appearing on English (and American) reality series and baking for members of the royal family. Others have become stars in their own right — one past *GBBO* winner is currently making bank with an OnlyFans account.
Read on to see the *Great British Bake Off *winners, then and now.

Edd Kimber, a debt collector from West Yorkshire, was just 24 when he won the first season of *The Great British Bake Off *in 2010.
In the 15 years since his win, Kimber has written six cookbooks. His latest, 2022's *Small Batch Bakes*, was lauded by English food titan Nigella Lawson and became a *Sunday Times* best-seller. He's whipped up decadent desserts on shows like *Good Morning America* and *Sunday Brunch*, and served as the resident baker on *The Alan Titchmarsh Show*.
Kimber regularly updates his Instagram with cooking tutorials and also collaborates with *Olive Magazine* on recipes and videos.**

In 2011, Joanne Wheatley of Essex won the second season of *GBBO. *
Since then, she published a pair of cookbooks — 2013's *A Passion for Baking* and 2014's *Home Baking* — and ran a home cooking school. She's performed cooking demonstrations on *The Alan Titchmarsh Show *and penned a* *column in *Sainsbury's*.
These days, she lives in Lisbon, Portugal, with her husband and dogs, Otis and Olive. She also recently became a grandmother. "Unfortunately, the recipe publishing has had to take a back seat because the oven I have here is unpredictable to say the least," she wrote on her website.**

Manchester's John Whaite famously cut his hand on an electric mixer during season 3 of *GBBO, *but nevertheless persevered to take the cake. Prior to the show, Whaite earned a law degree from Manchester University, but decided to set his sights on professional baking following the competition.
"I definitely want to bake professionally, but as a home baker I am going to need training," he told the *Manchester Evening News* in 2012. "I intend to raise funds for the Grand Diplome at the Cordon Bleu, and then learn as much as I can."
Whaite went on to find ample success on TV, serving as a resident chef on ITV's *Lorraine,* a cohost of the network's *Chopping Block, *and a frequent guest on Channel 4's *Steph's Packed Lunch*. He also penned five cookbooks, including 2014's *John Whaite Bakes at Home *and 2019's *A Flash in the Pan. ***

How *The* *Great British Baking Show* has changed with its new hosts and judge
In 2021, he joined the cast of the 19th season of *Strictly Come Dancing*, making it to the finals. The following year, he encored as part of the show's live tour.
Now, he runs Ruff Puff Brownies and its accompanying bakehouse, and shares steamy content on OnlyFans. While he says adults-only ventures cost him commercial partners and TV opportunities, he remains unapologetic about it.
"I came to TV very young. I was around 23 on *Bake Off* and for so long I thought that my existence hinged on being successful in television," he said in an August 2025 interview with *Gay Times Magazine*. "But I think when you go through all these different permutations of your life, you start to realize that the bulls--- just does not matter. What *actually* matters is your health, your sanity, your loved ones, your family, be it biological or chosen."
Speaking of loved ones, Whaite married his longtime partner, Paul Atkins, in 2024.**

Nancy Birtwhistle was 60 years old when she won season 5 of *GBBO *in 2014, making her the oldest winner in the series' history. Prior to joining the show, she worked for the National Health Service for 36 years. "[*The Great British Bake Off*] was the most difficult thing I have ever undertaken in my life, but equally the most enjoyable," she wrote on her website.
In the decade since her win, Birtwhistle has published six books — two about baking and four about eco-friendly living. Birtwhistle was also recruited for The CW's 2024 reality series *The Big Bakeover*, in which she helped give makeovers to struggling bakeries.**
In 2019, Birtwhistle reunited with fellow season 5 bakers for the wedding of a fellow contestant, Martha Collison. She made a Prinsesstårta for the occasion.
Now, she lives in Barton-upon-Humber with her husband, Tim. They share nine grandchildren, and, according to Birtwhistle, "each are developing their own baking skills."**
Nadiya Hussain (season 6)

Nadiya Hussain is among the most successful *GGBO* alums. Hussain was so popular on season 6 that David Cameron, then the British Prime Minister, was publicly rooting for her. Her dalliance with England's upper crust didn't stop there, either — the baker went on to provide the cake for Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday in 2016.
Hussain has gone on to host several shows of her own, including *The Chronicles of Nadiya *(2016), *Nadiya's British Food Adventure* (2017), *Nadiya's Family Favourites* (2018), and *Nadiya Bakes (2020),* among others.
In addition to her work with publications like BBC's *Good Food* and *The Times Magazine*, Hussain is the prolific author of 10 cookbooks, four children's books, three fiction books, and a 2019 autobiography, *Finding My Voice. *In 2020, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to broadcasting and the culinary arts.
"If you'd asked a couple of years ago, I would have said I just wanted to bake. But actually, this is more than a job," she said in a 2018 interview with *The Guardian*. "I realize the importance of being out there now, because growing up I didn't see girls like me on television. I didn't see brown skin. I didn't see people from ethnic minorities. I didn't see girls with headscarves."
Hussain recently celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary with her husband, Abdal.
Candice Brown (season 7)

Candice Brown was a phys-ed teacher in Berkhamsted when she won the seventh season of *GBBO*. She subsequently left her teaching gig, telling the *Telegraph* that she was "completely bowled over by the amazing opportunities that I have been offered."
Brown certainly took advantage of those opportunities. She's since published two cookbooks, 2017's *Comfort: Delicious Bakes and Family Treats *and 2021's *Happy Cooking*, and appeared on the 10th season of the British figure-skating competition *Dancing on Ice* in 2018. (Unfortunately, she went home first.)
Now, she runs two restaurants: a pub, Green Man, which she operates with her brother Ben, and the deli Margo's.**

Mandal became a columnist for the* Times* and made guest appearances on ITV's *This Morning*. He also published a book, 2022's *Showstopping Cakes: Mastering the Art and Science of Baking*, which was heralded by Nigella Lawson.
He got married in 2022 and welcomed a daughter, Debeshi, in 2024. "If there is anything that can ever top the experience of holding @britishbakeoff trophy, this is it," he wrote on Instagram in a post of him holding his newborn.**

He went on to publish several cookbooks for young chefs, including 2020's *My First Cookbook* and 2021's *Bake, Make, and Learn to Cook*. He also published *Good to Eat*, which caters to healthy eaters.
"Writing recipes for kids is all about making the recipes robust," he said in an interview with Story Monsters Ink. "You need them to withstand children adding more or less of the ingredients. I strongly believe kids should be in control of the recipe and I like to encourage them to experiment with flavors."
Currently, he cohosts a *GBBO*-themed podcast, *The Sticky Bun Boys*.**
