Sydney Sweeney is getting ahead of the denim questions.

The actress, who is set to debut her boxing biopic *Christy* at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, is preemptively shutting down the notion that she will spend any time addressing her controversial American Eagle ad campaign, "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans."

"I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it," Sweeney told *Vanity Fair* in an interview published Thursday. "I'm not there to talk about jeans."

She added, "The movie's about Christy [Martin], and that's what I'll be there to talk about."

Making its world premiere at TIFF on Friday, *Christy* tells the story of the groundbreaking professional boxer who rose to fame in the '90s, becoming one of the most prominent female athletes in the sport with 49 wins, seven losses, and three draws across her career. Martin's personal life proved just as headline-worthy as her professional achievements: The boxer married her coach Jim Martin in 1991, and he attempted to murder her in their home in 2010. He was ultimately found guilty of attempted murder in the second degree, and the athlete is now married to rival boxer Lisa Holewyne.

"I was blown away that her story wasn't more known on a universal, global level because it's just one of the most harrowing and inspiring women that I've ever met in my entire life," Sweeney told the magazine.

Directed by David Michôd, the biopic also stars Ben Foster (*Leave No Trace*), Merritt Wever (*Marriage Story*), Katy O'Brian (*Love Lies Bleeding*), and Ethan Embry (*Grace and Frankie*).

As she gears up to showcase the film, which includes a notable physical transformation from the actress, chatter about the various controversies surrounding Sweeney has not slowed down, even as she refuses to engage.

After breaking out for her role as Cassie Howard on HBO's *Euphoria*, Sweeney first sparked outrage in 2023 after photos emerged from her mother's 60th birthday featuring red MAGA-inspired hats. "There were so many misinterpretations," she said of the photos that year. "The people in the pictures weren't even my family."

She later started a social media frenzy with her controversial partnership with Dr. Squatch, which sold a limited-edition soap marketed as Sweeney's bathwater. But much more contentious was the reaction to her American Eagle ad campaign, released in July, which played up the homophones "jeans" and "genes."

While some have criticized the ad for seemingly promoting eugenics by having a blonde, blue-eyed woman talking about "good genes" at a particularly divisive moment in America, several conservative public figures — including Megyn Kelly, JD Vance, and even President Donald Trump — have voiced support for Sweeney, mocking others over their disdain of the ad.

Sweeney has yet to address the drama herself, but American Eagle has not backed down. In addition to an initial statement claiming that the ad "is and always was about the jeans," the brand has since praised Sweeney for her contributions to the campaign's success.

Earlier this week, American Eagle CMO Craig Brommers revealed that the buzzy marketing campaign paid off. During the company's Wednesday earnings call, Brommers told Wall Street analysts that they sold out of all the Sweeney-branded products within a week.

"Sydney Sweeney sells great jeans," Brommers said. "The American Eagle Sydney Sweeney campaign was intended to be a brand and business reset, and it was."**
