There's a good chance that Jay is screwed.

When *Ghosts* ended its fourth season, the chef had made a big mistake. In an attempt to secure his restaurant's success, he had accidentally sold his soul to the devil, and now he has Elias (Matt Walsh) hot on his trail trying to speed up the deal (a.k.a. kill him). So let's just say that it makes sense why Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) can be seen wearing a helmet and pads in EW's exclusive look at new episodes.

"Jay has gotten himself into this predicament," co-showrunner Joe Wiseman tells **, promising that the season 5 premiere picks up "pretty soon after that."

Wiseman continues, "In the finale, we hear him freaking out. He's afraid to use the toaster. He's worried. He does not like the situation that he's in so he's both trying to protect himself and he's also trying to think of ways to get out of it."

As for how he's emotionally coping with his new fate, co-showrunner Joe Port adds, "He's definitely on edge, as is Sam [Rose McIver]."

Jay's current situation brings up a larger question within the fandom: Will Jay ever have a near-death experience like Sam's that will allow him to see the ghosts permanently? "A lot of people want Jay to get the power so he can see ghosts, but we think that's sort of TV-ish," Port says. "Why would two people who live in this house have the same very rare, weird thing happen to them?"

Wiseman agrees. "Part of the fun is him wanting to know the ghosts and actually developing relationships [with them]. That was a big breakthrough for that character — he's almost jealous of Sam and wants to know about the ghosts. I get it, it sounds fun, but I worry a little magic of the show would be gone."

So perhaps don't hold your breath for that to happen anytime soon. But one thing you can expect is for Pete (Richie Moriarty) and Alberta (Danielle Pinnock) to discuss that kiss. Because Jay's terrible decision wasn't the only cliffhanger from last season.

"Pete and Alberta finally kissed," Wiseman says. "They're going to have to unpack that and figure out what that means."

Could they finally give this relationship thing a real go? "We're definitely going to explore their relationship and that dynamic early in the season," Port says.

Outside of the premiere, season 5 will also contain another of the series' beloved Halloween episodes. And this one will have a direct link to last year's. "Last year they did a yard sale on Halloween where we briefly saw an Egyptian mummy that Hetty [Rebecca Wisocky] and Elias had illicitly procured during the Gilded Age, which was a thing that some Gilded Age people did, and so that mummy is going to play a big role in this season's Halloween episode," Port says.**

Halloween isn't the only holiday getting the episode treatment. "We're going to do another two-part Christmas episode this year," Wiseman says. "I can't say much about it, but that's become both a fan favorite and a favorite for us to do."

And given Hetty's new-found power to see Jay on St. Patrick's Day — and only on St. Patrick's Day — the showrunners say we can expect another episode celebrating that particular holiday. Then there's the season's super-sized finale: "We're going to do an hour-long season finale, which we've never done," Port says.

And if Jay sold his soul to the devil in a half-hour episode, there's no telling what could go down in the season 5 finale.*****Ghosts* premieres Thursday, Oct. 16, at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT, on CBS.**
