When great artists are at their craft, they must never concern themselves with how the work will be received. But it's fair to surmise that when Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Rob Reiner were at work on *This Is Spinal Tap*, they knew that it would live forever beside one of mankind's greatest monuments.

We're speaking, of course, of the great rock 'n' roll madrigal "Stonehenge," a highlight of the fictional shapeshifting British rock group Spinal Tap's "prog" era. What's more, its legacy has been embraced in a surprising (and somewhat subtle) way.

The beloved mandolin-enhanced ode to Druidic folklore is known for offering, in the words of Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel, "the best production value we've ever had onstage," and one can understand why. After all, Stonehenge is where the "demons dwell," where the "banshees live," and where "children dance to the pipes of Pan." (How a Greek god ended up in Southern England is a little unclear, but who are we to question such a thing?)

When Tap was at their peak, busting out "Stonehenge" was guaranteed to melt the faces of all in attendance. Of course, *This Is Spinal Tap *is a document from well after the band's halcyon days.

A simple notation error led to the creation of a minuscule Stonehenge prop, making for one of the most memorable moments in Reiner and company's mock-rockumentary classic. As a result, for decades, dopey tourists have visited the actual Stonehenge site in the U.K. humming the tune. (Okay, maybe that was just us.)

But there is a little gift waiting for any Spinal Tap fan who makes the trip to Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. Before one walks (or takes the shuttle van) up to the enormous and mysterious stones, there is a museum exhibit. (And, of course, a gift shop.) An outer wall of the exhibit includes commentary through the centuries from great poets and scholars about the awe-inspiring site. Nestled in among the thought-provoking quotes from the likes of Samuel Pepys, William Wordsworth, Siegfried Sassoon and others, you'll find this gem:

"No one knows who they were or what they were doing." The line is credited to Nigel Tufnel, "rock musician" from 1984. (Rock, get it? The living rock of Stonehenge? Huh? Huh?)

One wonders how many people each day walk right by it without noticing.

We are eager to report that in October 2019, no one else seemed to clock it during a midday visit. Indeed, when we stopped strangers and pointed it out, most responded with a gentle "ah, nice" and a look of "get this guy away from me" in their eyes.

Here's a closer look.

Sara Whines, the communications manager of the English Heritage Trust, was eager to confirm to ** that the quotes all still remain at the Stonehenge visitor center.

"We still believe history should be equally as fun and inspiring as it is educational!" she said, proving that, to put it in the local parlance, 'avin a right laugh is important, innit?

According to deep Tap lore, the song comes from the concept album *The Sun Never Sweats*, an examination of all things British. Stylistically, the song's slow-fast-slow formula is reflective of many prog rock groups of the 1970s, but the resonant voice that David St. Hubbins uses on the chorus sounds an awful lot like Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull.

The British folkloric aspect to the song is also very Jethro Tull-like, though the "I just looked this up in the encyclopedia" quality of the lyrics is also reminiscent of Iron Maiden.

But dig this: Black Sabbath's 1983 album *Born Again* (one with neither Ozzy Osbourne nor Ronnie James Dio as lead vocalist, but Deep Purple and *Jesus Christ Superstar *alum Ian Gillan) does contain a two-minute instrumental track on it called "Stonehenge." What's more, their stage show from the time period included a gigantic facsimile of the famous stones. According to legend, there was a mix-up on tour, leading the prop to have something of a reverse Spinal Tap problem: they were too big for the stage.

What's amazing, though, is that this occurred after Reiner already filmed the gag for the movie. There's a fine line between stupid and clever, indeed.**

As a promotion for the *This Is Spinal Tap *sequel, *Spinal Tap II: The End Continues*, the pretend British band collaborated with the very real British rocker Elton John for a new version of the fan favorite. Enjoy!********
