- MSNBC has fired political analyst Matthew Dowd for his comments about Charlie Kirk following his fatal shooting.
- Dowd responded to an on-air question about the environment the United States is in.
- He said that "hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions."
MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd was fired Wednesday following his comments about America's tumultuous political culture in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of conservative TV personality Charlie Kirk.
Multiple reports indicate that Dowd is no longer with the network.**** Kirk, 31, was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon while answering an audience member's question about gun violence during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University. During *MSNBC Live With Katy Tur*'s coverage of the shooting, Dowd was asked about "the environment in which a shooting like this happens."
"He's been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures, in this, who's constantly sort of pushing this hate speech aimed at certain groups. I always go back to hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions," Dowd responded.

Added Dowd, "And I think that is the environment we're in. You can't stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have, and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that's the unfortunate environment we're in."
Dowd later apologized via BlueSky, writing, "My thoughts & prayers are w/ the family and friends of Charlie Kirk," before referencing his comments earlier that day.
"I was asked a question on the environment we are in," he explained. "I apologize for my tone and words. Let me be clear, I in no way intended for my comments to blame Kirk for this horrendous attack. Let us all come together and condemn violence of any kind."**

Kirk, whose stances often polarized the public, was a firm supporter of President Donald Trump, who announced Kirk's death.
"The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead," President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on Wednesday afternoon. "No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us."

In addition to Trump, conservative Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly fought back tears on the air while announcing Kirk's death. Still, others online pointed out the irony of Kirk's death, after he was quoted in a 2023 interview saying, "It's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights."
