After working on three Stephen King movies, *Sleepwalkers* (1992), *The Life of Chuck* (2024), and now *The Long Walk* (2025), Mark Hamill feels a strong connection to the horror best-seller's collective works.

During an interview with ** for the latter film, he shares his experience watching Brian de Palma's film adaptation of *Carrie* (1976) and a certain movie theater usher who ruined what he calls "one of the greatest jump scares in the history of cinema" for him.

At the end of the movie, Amy Irving's Sue Snell has a nightmare where she visits the site of the White family's collapsed house. She places a small bouquet of flowers on the ground, only for Carrie's (Sissy Spacek) bloody arm to pop out of the rubble and grab her in one final scare for the audience.

"I saw it in Westwood," Hamill says, referring to the Los Angeles neighborhood. "Just moments before that happened, an usher put the flashlight on and said, 'There's no smoking in the theater.' I wasn't smoking. Maybe somebody down the row was. But I turned to say, 'I'm not smoking,' and I heard the whole theater go, 'Ah!'"

When he snapped back to the screen, Carrie's arm was already in full view. "I'll never forgive that person because you don't get a second time to be surprised like that," Hamill says. "I still love the movie, but, oh, I'm so angry 'cause, like I say, that's one of my favorite jump scares of all time and I missed it, thanks to an overactive usher."

Hamill first played a very minor role, that of Sheriff Jenkins in *Sleepwalkers*, which was King's first original screenplay not based on one of his own books. "I don't even know if I got paid, but I totally forgot about it," he told EW. "If there's not a premiere of a movie, sometimes they'll slip through, and I don't see 'em. I think I eventually saw it, but it was so long ago, I can't remember much of it."

Decades later, Hamill teamed up with *Doctor Sleep* and *Gerald's Game* director Mike Flanagan, a frequent King adapter, for *The Life of Chuck*, an end-of-the-world story told in reverse order. The *Star Wars* actor played the accountant father of Tom Hiddleston's titular dance enthusiast, Chuck.

In *The Long Walk, *based on King's 1979 novel, Hamill now plays the Major, the leader of a Gestapo-esque police force in a dystopian vision of America ruled by a dictator. The story follows a group of working-class young men competing in an annual contest in which they walk until only one person is left standing, while those who fall behind are gunned down.

Hamill was reluctant to play the role, given his aversion to gun violence and general horror. However, "Clearly, it's not about the violence," he said, noting how "it's about the relationships of these guys. The real heart and soul of the picture are their experiences under these incredible circumstances."

*The Long Walk* is out in theaters Sept. 12.
