- Luca Guadagnino told reporters that his new film *After the Hunt* feels "very linked" to Woody Allen.
- The Italian director discussed using a font in the movie's opening credits that recalls the typography of Allen's films.
- Guadagnino contemplated "our responsibility" when engaging with work from controversial artists.
Luca Guadagnino has revealed a surprising influence on his latest movie.
The *Call Me by Your Name* and *Challengers* director premiered his new drama *After the Hunt* at the Venice International Film Festival on Friday, and discussed how the life and work of Woody Allen impacted the project.
During a press conference, Guadagnino was asked why the film's opening credits feature a font that bears a striking resemblance to the typeface Allen has used in most of his movies.
"The crass answer would be 'Why not?'" Guadagnino answered, before noting that the "canon" of the *Annie Hall* filmmaker influenced more than just the typography of his latest movie, which grapples with the fallout of sexual abuse allegations.**

Rebecca Hall expresses 'regret' over her 2018 apology for working with Woody Allen
"We couldn't stop thinking of *Crimes and Misdemeanors*, or *Another Woman*, or even *Hannah and Her Sisters*," Guadagnino explained, shouting out three of Allen's '80s movies that deal with extramarital affairs. "And there was an infrastructure to the story that felt very linked to the great oeuvre of Woody Allen between 1985 and 1991, I would say."
Guadagnino also said that while he used similar typography in previous projects, he intended *After the Hunt*'s font to be a more overt reference to Allen, suggesting that the film's themes echo the controversy surrounding allegations of sexual misconduct that have long shadowed Allen.
"I felt it was also sort of like [an] interesting nod to thinking of an artist who has been, in a way, facing some sort of problems about his being," Guadagnino said. "What is our responsibility in looking at the work of an artist that we love like Woody Allen? And by the way, it's a classic, that kind of font. I just want to conclude it's such a classic that it goes beyond Woody now."
** has reached out to a representative for Allen for comment on Guadagnino's remarks.
*After the Hunt* stars Julia Roberts (who worked with Allen on his 1996 film *Everyone Says I Love You*) as a professor who is rattled when a student (Ayo Edebiri) accuses another instructor (Andrew Garfield) of sexual abuse. The film also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Chloë Sevigny, and Lío Mehiel.
The film currently holds a 50 percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is set to hit theaters Oct. 10.

Allen was first accused of sexually abusing his 7-year-old adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow by his ex, Mia Farrow, shortly after she discovered his sexual relationship with her adoptive daughter Soon-Yi Previn, whom Allen later married. Dylan reiterated the accusations in 2013 and again in 2017. Allen has consistently denied the Farrows' claims and has never been charged with a crime.**
