Colin Farrell had to break out his dancing shoes for *A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.*

In his upcoming fantasy romance movie with Margot Robbie, their characters, David and Sarah, two singles who meet at a wedding, embark on a life-changing road trip, reliving important moments from their pasts through magical doorways.

As seen in *'*s exclusive sneak peek photo above, one of those memories is the opening night of David's high school musical, where he starred in *How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying*. But David doesn't just see his younger self singing and dancing onstage — he has to get up there and perform the opening number himself, decades later.

"It was mortifying," Farrell tells EW with a laugh during his joint phone call with Robbie. "I was so uncomfortable. But it was fun as well, I'm not going to lie."

Farrell admits he "had a suspicion" he would have to perform a musical theater number when he first signed on to star in the movie, because director Kogonada (*After Yang*) warned him in advance that the scene was what made him fall in love with Seth Reiss' script in the first place.

"I just couldn't stop reading [the script when I first got it]," Kogonada tells EW. "It was so funny, it had a real rhythm to it. And then when I got to the high school musical scene, I was like, 'Oh, I *have* to make this.'"

The filmmaker says both Farrell and Robbie "loved" the musical theater number when they read it in the script as well.

"They were game for it," Kogonada adds. "We were all giddy about doing it, and we even joked about being secret dorks, all of us. We all love musicals."

Robbie had been looking forward to shooting that scene in particular ever since she signed on to star opposite Farrell, knowing he had to take center stage on his own.

"I was very excited the day we shot this, because I get to just sit in the audience and actually watch Colin do a high school musical," she says. "It was amazing. He was so good."

"She got to watch me squirm. Squirm!" Farrell says while Robbie laughs. "It was not the dancing, it was the squirming that made her giddy."

While the opening night of his high school musical is an important moment in David's life, it's also meaningful for the overall story of the sweeping romance. The director was intrigued by how Reiss' script "felt like a musical" throughout the entire film as David and Sarah go on both a literal and figurative journey together.

"It's like there was this theater that was happening even outside of the high school musical," Kogonada says. "I was really interested in the ways in which artifice, like a musical or like anime, that seems so far from our reality, can create such an emotional response." The director wanted to explore "the possibility of love and restoring our belief in it, and [this is] just really such a smart, original way to deal with our past and our memories."

What makes *A Big Bold Beautiful Journey *unique is the fact that it is not about soul mates finding each other, according to Farrell. Instead, it's about two strangers who learn how to grow from their past experiences so they are able to fall in love with each other.

"It's a really extraordinary script that is about some pretty heartbreaking things and events that take place in Margot's character's life and my character's life," Farrell explains. "Told through this really forgiving, really hopeful lens. It's really stunning."

*A Big Bold Beautiful Journey* premieres Sept. 19 in theaters.
