Simon Cowell was not impressed with Tom Sandoval and the Most Extras' performance when they appeared on the first night of the live quarterfinals of* America's Got Talent* season 20.

Cowell hit his "X" buzzer from the judge's row before the end of the cover band's version of the Weeknd's "Blinding Lights," which featured Sandoval in all black, including gloves, demonstrating some of his dance moves.

"Well, I like Tom, and I like the band," Cowell explained to host Terry Crews and the audience on the live episode. "However, you know, judging this performance, it didn't sound great. Look, it might just be me from where I sat, but that did not sound good, I'm afraid. It didn't."

The tough-to-please Cowell, who's friends with Sandoval's former employer Lisa Vanderpump, had recognized Sandoval immediately when his band auditioned for the show.

Next to Cowell, his fellow judge Sofia Vergara somewhat agreed.

"I mean, I loved the dancing. I loved the band. I loved the song," she said. "The sound was not amazing, but this was super entertaining."

Mel B was a serious fan.

"I mean, I said it before, but I'm gonna say it again," Mel B said. "You make me smile. You just do. You know what? Yeah, you're a cover band, but you know what? You just bring a little bit of happiness."

Then she spoke directly to the former *Vanderpump Rules* star.

"And the way that you commit is flawless," the former Spice Girl said. "Those moves, brother, they're lit."

Howie Mandel agreed.

"Listen, your aspirations.... As you said, this is a show of redemption," Mandel said to Sandoval, who said in his first appearance that his band helped him get through the fallout of Scandoval. "What you want to do is you want to do music. You want to be the most fun cover band, and that's well worth looking at. I think there are people who are watching who probably want you to play their weddings, their parties, their clubs."

Mel B reminded Sandoval that she'd wanted his band to play her nuptials, but it's too late for that now; she married hairstylist Rory McPhee in London on July 5 in London, according to PEOPLE.

"I got married. Sorry," she told him.

He summed up his take: "You're good people having a fun time, that's what this show is all about. I can't thank you enough, Tom."

Mel B said she wanted Americans to vote for Tom Sandoval and the Most Extras.

Viewers can cast a ballot for them and any of the other 10 acts that performed Tuesday for the first time this season at the voting website. Voting ends Wednesday at 7 a.m. ET.

The results will be revealed on *America's Got Talent *on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.**
