- *Fast X *raced into theaters on May 19, 2023.
- The action-packed entry ends on a major cliffhanger — and reintroduces some unexpected characters.
- A direct sequel is slated for release in April 2027.
The *Fast & Furious* franchise began as an exploration of underground street racers and evolved, hilariously, into one of Hollywood's most explosive action franchises. But while the stunts have gotten bigger, the film's focus on the importance of found family has remained intact.
The latest installment, *Fast X* (2023), sustains that focus while steering the series back to its roots. Prior to its release, director Louis Leterrier said as much while speaking with **. "If I get to do a *Fast & Furious* movie, it's the one that brought back racing to the forefront," he said. "That's my legacy as a director, I wanted to bring cars back to the forefront of *Fast & Furious*."
But that doesn't mean its engines aren't firing on all cylinders. If anything, *Fast X* raises the stakes higher than ever, introducing a wily new foe who will stop at nothing to take down Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his team.
Grab a Corona and buckle up — we're breaking down the ending of *Fast X*, including its biggest cliffhangers and those unexpected returns.
What is *Fast X *about?

Like clockwork, *Fast X* opens with the illusion that Dom is, at long last, living a peaceful life with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and his son, Little B (Leo Abelo Perry). But let's be real: serenity never lasts long in the *Fast & Furious* universe.
Sure enough, the quiet is shattered when a new villain rolls into town in the form of Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), a chaotic, fashion-forward maniac with a personal vendetta and a flair for over-the-top drama.

From that point on, *Fast X* becomes one long, pedal-to-the-metal mission as Dom tries to protect his ever-growing family — or as Agency leader Aimes (Alan Ritchson) puts it, "a cult with cars."
But who exactly is Dante, and why is he targeting Dom and the crew? In this franchise, villains tend to have a grudge that links back to a previous *Fast *film.
Who is Dante in Fast X?

As it turns out, Dante Reyes is the son of Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida), the corrupt drug lord who terrorized our heroes in *Fast Five* (2011). Remember the guy who kept his fortune in a giant vault that Dom and Brian (Paul Walker) literally dragged through the streets of Rio? Yeah, that's him.
Dante was there that day, watching it all unfold, and he's been nursing a grudge ever since. Not only did Dom's crew kill his dad, but they also stole the money and split it amongst themselves. Now, over a decade later, Dante's out for revenge.
In an interview with EW pegged to the *Fast X* trailer, Leterrier said Dante is "so different from any villain you've ever seen in any franchise." He described the character as "pure evil" and "obsessed with Dom" to the point that he knows absolutely everything about him.
"He's studied Dom for years, and he actually forged himself as the anti-Dom," Leterrier added. "He is the yang of his yin, the antichrist of his Christ. When Dom wears blacks or whites, he wears nothing but colors. Dom has a close shaved head, he has the hair, he paints his nails. He has the same car, but different — Dom will drive a Dodge, he will drive a Chevy. That's the thing: he teases him, he pushes Dom's buttons."
Who dies in Fast X?

Not everyone makes it to the finish line in *Fast X*, and one of the biggest gut punches comes via the death of Jakob Toretto (John Cena), Dom's once-estranged brother who's embraced the *Fast* family after playing the villain in *F9*.
In the final act, as Dante launches his plan to kidnap Little B, Jakob shifts into uncle mode. With a pack of enemies on their tail, he pulls off a fiery, high-speed sacrifice to save Dom and Little B, driving a rocket car straight into Dante's goons.
"That was my idea," Leterrier told EW. "That's one of the things I came up with early on."
Cena was initially shocked by the call to kill off Jakob, and Leterrier said it took some convincing to get him to see the vision. "I said to John, 'You will have to sacrifice yourself, to give the ultimate gift to your brother to save his son,' and it upset him," Leterrier recalled.
Leterrier recalled explaining his vision for Jakob's sacrifice to the actor in between takes, and how Cena eventually came around to the idea. "I pitched him this thing and then he loved it. And that literally changed his performance because he understood where he was going," said Leterrier. 'I'm going to give so much love so then the sacrifice really hurts.' And it really does hurt."
What happens at the end of Fast X?

*Fast X* leaves a number of dangling threads as Dante's revenge leaves the team scattered and their futures uncertain.
Once Dom finally reunites with his son, it briefly seems like they will get out of this without so much as a scratch. But that hope is quickly shattered when Dante traps them at the top of a massive dam in Portugal using two fuel-loaded 18-wheeler trucks.
Just before the impact, Dom's supposed ally and the new leader of the Agency, Aimes, reveals he's actually been working with Dante all along. He then fires a rocket launcher at a plane carrying Han (Sung Kang), Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges), and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), sending it crashing behind a mountain.

Dom manages a daring escape by driving down the face of the dam with Little B by his side. The car crashes into the water below, and they survive, at least for the moment.
Determined to finish the job, Dante detonates explosives on the dam itself. With no way out, Dom and Little B look at each other as the dam begins to crack. The screen then cuts to black, leaving fans in the dark about their fate.
Meanwhile, we see Tess (Brie Larson), the daughter of former Agency head Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), shot by a sniper under Dante's orders. She's rushed to a hospital by Isabel (Daniela Melchior).
Enemy-turned-ally Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) also learns that Dante has put a target out on his mother, Queenie (Helen Mirren), and sets out to save her before it's too late.
Who returns at the end of Fast X?
Gal Gadot as Gisele Yashar in 'Fast X'.

Just when you think *Fast X* has thrown every twist possible, Gisele Yashar (Gal Gadot) shows up out of nowhere. She pops out of a submarine in Antarctica to rescue Letty and Cipher (Charlize Theron) from a high-tech prison. Letty and Cipher were both arrested earlier in the film.
No one, and we mean *no one*, bothers to explain how Gisele survived her fall on that endless runway back in *Fast & Furious 6* (2013). Apparently, not even Gadot knows what's going on yet. "Well, I'm going to have to wait for the script just like everyone else," she told EW back in June 2023. "And I'm curious myself."
In a mid-credits scene, Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) also makes an unexpected return. He storms an abandoned theater with his team, where he gets a call from Dante and learns that he's next on the hit list. Hobbs, after all, is* *the one who killed Dante's father. Hobbs, never one to back down, says he's not hard to find and then crushes the phone with his bare hands.
The wrestler-turned-actor later confirmed the surprise comeback himself in a video posted to social media, revealing that the long-running feud between him and Diesel has been squashed.
"Despite us having our differences, me and Vin, we've been like brothers for years," Johnson said. "You just think about the future, you just think about plans that are much bigger than ourselves."
When does *Fast 11 *come out?
(Left to right) Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Han (Sung Kang), Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel), Dom (Vin Diesel), Little B (Leo Abelo Perry), Abuelita (Rita Moreno), Mia (Jordana Brewster), Tej (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges), and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) in 'Fast X'.
Peter Mountain/Universal Pictures
In June 2025, Diesel revealed that the 11th (and reportedly final) installment of the *Fast & Furious *saga had been delayed again, and wouldn't hit theaters until April 2027. This is the third date for the upcoming film, which was originally gunning for an April 4, 2025 release before getting bumped to sometime in 2026.
"The studio said to me, 'Vin, can we please have the finale of *Fast & Furious* [in] April 2027?'" he told a crowd at FuelFest in Pomona, Calif.. "I said, 'Under three conditions.' First, is to bring the franchise back to L.A.! The second thing was to return to the car culture, to the street racing! The third thing was reuniting Dom and Brian O'Conner."
That last one raised more than a few eyebrows, considering Walker, who played Brian, tragically died in a car accident in 2013. Diesel didn't explain how they plan to bring Brian back, but his comments certainly sparked a whole lot of questions.
