Chris Columbus won't be contorting into the superhero genre anytime soon in part due to his experience on 2005's *Fantastic Four*.

On a recent appearance on the *Fade to Black* podcast to discuss his latest Netflix feature, *Thursday Murder Club*, the veteran director and writer confirmed that he penned a script for what would become 2005's* Fantastic Four *in 1995, but was fired from the job because he "had too much of an opinion."

"We were in a weird situation," Columbus said. "I had worked on a script. There were a lot of writers involved. They were about to make a movie and I was producing it. I came in and met with the director and had some ideas. I basically said, 'Some of this conceptual art should feel more like Jack Kirby, who was the artist of the Fantastic Four, and feel more like the Silver Age of Marvel.'"**

Well, "I left that meeting and on the way back to my house, I got a call from the head of 20th Century Fox saying, 'You're fired. You had too much of an opinion,'" Columbus said, adding that while he received an executive producer credit on the film, he "had nothing to do with it."

Columbus, who also wrote a Daredevil script at some point, said he no longer harbors a desire to write superhero films, citing all the "perfect" entries that already exist.**

"Over the years people have done it so well that I personally lost interest in making a superhero movie," Columbus said. "It started a little bit with *Spider-Man 2.* When I saw what Sam Raimi did with that I thought it was a perfect superhero movie. Certainly Matt Reeves' *The Batman* with Robert Pattinson was a brilliant film. I realized I don't have a desire to make those movies anymore because people are doing them better than I could ever imagine at this point in my career."**

"I think getting fired on the Fantastic Four films probably soured me a little bit," he added of the superhero genre.

Mark Frost and Michael France are billed as writers on the first *Fantastic Four*, which starred Ioan Gruffudd (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic), Jessica Alba (Invisible Woman/Sue Storm), Chris Evans (Human Torch/Johnny Storm), and Michael Chiklis (Ben Grimm/The Thing) as the core superheroes. It also featured Julian McMahon as Doctor Doom.

Suffice to say Columbus, known for directing such classics as the *Home Alone* movies and* Mrs. Doubtfire*, recovered from that firing, going on to helm the first two *Harry Potter *films, among other blockbusters.
