They say in space no one can hear you scream, but can they hear you call 911?
In a new trailer released today, ahead of next week's *9-1-1* season 9 premiere, Athena (Angela Bassett) and Hen (Aisha Hinds) find themselves facing a crisis in zero gravity.
"All contact with the spacecraft was lost due to a sudden geomagnetic storm," an Elon Musk-esque businessman named Trip Houser (played by guest star Mark Consuelos) says at a press conference in the trailer...though he knew very well he was sending the civilian crew of his ship's maiden voyage into danger.

Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Athena (Angela Bassett) in space on the '9-1-1' season 9 premiere.
"I think it's a great trailer," Oliver Stark, who plays firefighter Buck on the ABC first responder drama, tells **. "And I'm really happy that it really leans into the story and plot maybe more than some previous season [preview] trailers have. To me, it almost feels like a feature trailer. And I'm glad that it gave a lot of context to how they end up in space, that they weren't sent there to help someone out. They found a tangible reason for them to be sent up."
That reason is Trip credits Hen with saving his life after he's swallowed whole by a whale while kayaking. (An emergency that showrunner Tim Minear previously teased to EW is based on a real-life incident.) He offers Hen a spot as one of the "five everyday heroes" to experience the first launch of his new spacecraft.

Trip Houser (Mark Consuelos) in danger on the '9-1-1' season 9 premiere.
Hen first asks her wife, Karen (Tracie Thoms), to join her on the adventure, but the scientist declines based on her feelings about Trip. Next, the firefighter asks Athena, whose "absolutely not" somehow turns into an "I can't believe I let you talk me into this."
Trip is warned by a colleague (played by *Teen Wolf* alum Max Carver) about the impending geomagnetic storm, but Trip refuses to scrub the launch.
As the trailer shows, all hell breaks loose — both on the spacecraft and back on earth, where meteoroids or debris rain down all over Los Angeles.

Athena (Angela Basset) in space on the '9-1-1' season 9 premiere.
"*9-1-1* always tries to one-up itself," says Stark. "And I think the magic to doing that is that it's not always necessarily bigger, but it's more intense and it's smarter and more clever. This is obviously taking it in a new direction: space. But the space story is also causing new and unique chaos down on Earth. I think we have some really special emergencies for the 118 to deal with while Hen and Athena are up dealing with zero gravity."**
*9-1-1* season 9 premieres Thursday, Oct. 9 on ABC.**
