Newlyweds Maria and Rylee Medina shared in a viral TikTok video that they were shocked when they looked through their wedding photos and saw several solo shots of Maria's younger brother, Jose Medina

The couple realized that Jose had his "own photo shoot" mid-reception

"My brother and I think it's really nuts that he went viral like that. We posted it mostly for ourselves, but it's great to see how many people have watched the video and found it funny," Maria tells PEOPLE

A pair of newlyweds were excitedly looking through their wedding photos one day, but stopped when they saw something completely unexpected — and hilarious.

When Maria Medina, 26, and her wife, Rylee Medina, 27, were looking through their digital wedding photos three months after tying the knot, they paused because there was an eyebrow-raising amount of photos of Maria's younger brother, Jose Medina, 19. That's when they realized that the teenager had taken advantage of his sister's wedding photographer by having his "own photo shoot" in the middle of her reception.

"We were clicking through them and saw there were back-to-back pictures taken of just him," Maria tells PEOPLE. "We immediately started laughing and asking ourselves, 'What the hell? When did this even happen?' "

The women quickly posted a video of themselves laughing as they clicked through color and black-and-white photos of Jose — all in different poses — at their reception on July 19 at The Gahanna Sanctuary in Ohio.

They wrote in an onscreen text overlay, "pov ur little brother has his own photoshoot in the middle of your wedding reception," and added in the caption, "had more solo pics than any of the bridal party too like 😭😭😭😭."

"Three thousand dollars," one of the women said in the video, presumably referring to the total expense of the wedding photos. "Why do you have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven pictures on our photo album?"

Maria and Rylee sent the video to Jose, who "laughed at it without realizing it was gonna go so viral." The video has amassed 12.6 million views and 2.6 million likes since being posted on Oct. 19.

Maria doesn't necessarily think Jose had the intention of sneaking away from the 90 guests to score a free photo shoot because "he said he forgot he'd even asked for those." She says, "He was just trying to be funny."

In any case, Maria, Rylee, Jose and the photographer are blown away by how many people online were amused by the impromptu wedding photo session.

"Our photographer, McKaylee Courtright, said he asked and she delivered. She thought it was crazy that it went viral," Maria says. "My brother and I think it's really nuts that he went viral like that. We posted it mostly for ourselves, but it's great to see how many people have watched the video and found it funny."

She adds, "Jose has been getting a lot of comments from classmates at his college in Cincinnati. He's loving the clout."

TikTok users joked in the comments section that the pictures were probably for Jose's dating apps.

"He had a Hinge photoshoot at ur wedding," one person teased, with another adding, "The fact the photographer edited it too is HILARIOUS."

Another TikToker said, "Babyyyy he was getting you your moneys worth."

"Me when I look fly and big sis is footing the bill 😭😂," the top comment reads.
