When Cheryl Hines married Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in 2014, she hadn't imagined their union would lead to her being a "political spouse." That includes dealing with the harsh realities of what being the wife of a potential president entails — like the threat of assassinations.

In an interview with *CBS Mornings* on Tuesday, Hines admitted that she feared for her husband's safety when he kicked off his presidential campaign in April 2023.

"From the moment he announced he was running, I knew our lives would never be the same," Hines told CBS News' Natalie Morales. She added that it wasn't just the concept of a role markedly different than the ones that had made her a household name, like starring alongside Larry David on *Curb Your Enthusiasm*. It was the danger that came with Kennedy's desired role.

"I found it stressful that Bobby didn't get Secret Service protection," she explained. "[I was] concerned about his safety and I think every day somebody would say to me, 'Are you worried about him getting shot like his father and like his uncle?' And I was. I was very worried about it."

Kennedy's father, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated in 1968 during his presidential campaign. His death came just years after Kennedy's uncle, President John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in 1963 while riding in a presidential motorcade in Dallas.

Kennedy, who had been running as an Independent candidate during his campaign, announced in August 2024 that he was "suspending" his run in the presidential race, and went on to endorse Republican nominee Donald Trump shortly after dropping out.

Although Hines didn't voice support for either party, she did post in support of her husband's decision to "run on the principle of unity" amid divisive politics in the race at large, and was equally supportive when he became the Secretary of Health and Human Services — to much controversy.

Controversy that does nothing to quell the Emmy-nominated performer's fear for her husband's safety. "[I'm] still worried about it," Hines told Morales. "I don't think Bobby tells me all of the threats he gets if I'm being honest."

Kennedy's support of Trump and his stance as a prominent critic of COVID and vaccines has made him a polarizing political figure, which Hines said she understands despite the worry it creates.

"Bobby and I, we're able to disagree on things. I mean, sometimes we have heated discussions, but we always come back around to, 'I hear what you're saying,'" she said. "I understand how people feel like, 'We have to do it. Do not question it. If that's what's coming down from the government, let's trust that.' I understand that. And then I also understand the mothers, the parents who talk to me personally and say, 'My child was different after they got vaccinated.' Let's listen to people. Let's listen to parents. Let's listen to doctors, to science."

Kennedy has clashed with some doctors and scientists who work for him, as well as members of his own family. His siblings have been candid about their disdain for Kennedy's views on vaccines and alignment with Trump.**

"It was hard. I found it to be hard," Hines said of the family rift. "I always thought the Kennedy family, one of their virtues was that family came first, and I admired that. So when some of his family decided to attack him publicly, it was disappointing."
