The creator of Netflix's summer hit* The Hunting Wives *wants everyone to know that it's not for people with a certain political bend, but something a little less specific.

"I've heard some people say that the show is part of this new mandate to make red-state content, and that wasn't what it was," Rebecca Cutter told* The Hollywood Reporter* in an interview published Tuesday. "I mean, it was for horny middle-aged women."

Brittany Snow, Malin Akerman, Dermot Mulroney, and Chrissy Metz star in the sexy story — based on the 2021 novel of the same name by May Cobb — of Snow's Sophie, a Democratic operative, and her family relocating from Boston to East Texas, where she becomes involved in multiple ways with a wealthy socialite and her group of friends. They're politically conservative, while Sophie is a liberal.

"The politics were to try and make it more specific, and maybe some part of my belief system is in there too, but I was trying very hard to be fair to all the characters," Cutter said of the thriller. "I don't want to make a show where I'm despising half the characters. That's not fun as a writer."

She made a change from the book in order to give the story a boost in tense times.

"In the book, she's from Texas and going back home. But I'm not a Texan," Cutter said. "My entrée is as a liberal elite. That's how I would be more interested in seeing this. But I didn't make that change to make the show more political. It was more to make it feel more specific. Like, who are these women? Who are the upper middle class white ladies shooting guns and drinking who don't work? Who would the 'hunting wives' be? Well, they would be conservatives, obviously."

The series became an immediate hit, earning the title of last week's most streamed series in the U.S.
