Nothing humbles a gal quite like the horrors of an old haircut.
Savannah Guthrie had the misfortune of learning this in a very public forum — live on *Today* — this week. Joined by cohost Craig Melvin, the 53-year-old anchor was innocently interacting with fans at New York City's Rockefeller Plaza on Wednesday when Melvin spotted a woman holding up a poster of Guthrie sporting her '90s-era black bob.
"Before we do anything else," he interrupted, approaching the fan, "I wanna introduce — I don't know who this woman is. What's your name?"
After the fan identified herself as Carol, Melvin asked, "Where did you find this picture?"
Behind him, Guthrie was already laughing and turning red, covering her face in shock and embarrassment.

"Found it online," Carol said, explaining that she hails from Tucson, Ariz., where Guthrie worked at local station KVOA in the early days of her career. The poster featured a throwback shot of a dark-haired Guthrie covering the Olympics and text that read, "KVOA Tucson. Watching you since then."
"Oh my gosh, hi. Well, welcome..." Guthrie greeted Carol, before jokingly covering the photo. "And I think we don't need to see that."
"I disagree!" Melvin insisted.

Guthrie then attempted to explain her choices by comparing her haircut to Jennifer Aniston's iconic *Friends* haircut, which became ubiquitous during the hit show's run. "It was very '90s," she said. "I think I tried to have 'the Rachel.'"
"It's beautiful," Melvin replied.
As the hosts walked away, Guthrie called back to Carol, "Thanks for coming, now we can burn that."
When Guthrie and Melvin threw to weatherman Al Roker, he couldn't help but keep the joke going, teasing, "That's crazy how you used to dye your hair black!"
"No, that's my natural hair color," Guthrie clarified, before quickly adding, "Let's change the subject."

Guthrie is no stranger to confronting her past looks, having tried out a number of hair colors and styles throughout her years as a broadcast journalist. When she celebrated her 10th anniversary at *Today* in 2021, she even divulged which one she continues to regret to this day.
"I don't know why I thought I needed to dye my hair red that one time," Guthrie told cohost Dylan Dreyer at the time. "I just went out one day and dyed it red one day and came in [to the show] the next day and all the bosses were like 'Oh, looks good,'" she recalled, recreating their nervous smiles.
Asked if she ever reflects on her past style decisions and considers redoing any of her old looks, Guthrie joked, "No, mostly it's like, 'Never try that again.' Mostly it's like, 'What was I thinking?!'"**
