Emerald Fennell is ready to take audiences out on the wily, windy moors.

The audacious director (*Promising Young Woman, Saltburn*) and Warner Bros. Pictures dropped the trailer for her third film behind the camera, an adaptation of Emily Brontë's *Wuthering Heights, *the classic piece of Gothic literature that follows the doomed romance of Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi) and Cathy (Margot Robbie).

The trailer opens as Catherine Earnshaw, known as Cathy, daydreams of Heathcliff, remembering him telling her that he could follow her "like a dog till the end of the world." It's our first glimpse of their obsessive, destructive romance, as we tumble into a montage of erotic images, including Heathcliff pitching hay, Cathy's corseted chest heaving to catch her breath, an unknown set of fingers in Cathy's mouth, and more.

We see a more complete vision of the shots that were previously released from set of Cathy in a wedding gown walking through a field, as well as a sequence in which Heathcliff visibly grimaces as Cathy kisses another man.

The moors, of course, get plenty of airtime as the teaser winds to a close with Heathcliff wrapping his hands around Cathy, asking her if she wants him to stop, as she breathlessly tells him, "No."

The trailer features Charli XCX's song, "Everything Is Romantic," and the pop star is contributing new, original music to the film.

*Wuthering Heights *seems a natural next step for Fennell, who drew heavily on tropes of the Gothic romance and even borrowed imagery from the novel for her sophomore feature *Saltburn. *

*"Wuthering Heights* is my favorite book," she said during a press event premiering the teaser, as well as additional footage that will not yet be shared with the public. "I first read it when I was 14 and have read it probably every year, ever since, and then about a million times while making this film. It always struck me as the most emotionally devastating book ever written.

"The thing that we wanted to do with this was make a really, truly transformative experience of a movie," she continued. "Something that was our kind of tribute to the golden age Hollywood romances."

Added Robbie: "It's so epic in nature, so incredibly romantic, and it really is this stunning world that makes you just want to be there. You're thoroughly transported."

In addition to starring as Cathy, Robbie is also producing via her company LuckyChap, marking the third film she and Fennell have partnered on. Fennell is also producing out of the studio MRC.

First published in 1847, *Wuthering Heights *tells the story of two families living on the inhospitable West Yorkshire moors — the Earnshaws and the Lintons. It charts the doomed love between Cathy and Heathcliff, the adopted foster son of the Earnshaw family. Cathy loves Heathcliff, but she craves the security and social status afforded her by a marriage to Edgar Linton. Eventually, Heathcliff is driven mad by his love for Cathy and is haunted by her ghost.

*Wuthering Heights *has been adapted to the screen several times before, most famously in a 1939 version starring Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon. That adaptation was nominated for Best Picture. There is also a 1970 film starring Timothy Dalton as Heathcliff, a 1992 film starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, and several BBC and ITV television adaptations.

Most recently, it received a 2011 adaptation directed by Andrea Arnold and starring Kaya Scodelario and James Howson.

Fennell's version has already generated controversy over its casting, with many objecting to Robbie's age and blonde hair. However, the main point of contention was Elordi's casting over a person of color as Heathcliff, given that the character is referred to in the novel as "a dark-skinned gipsy."

Casting director Kharmel Cochrane previously defended Fennell's choices, saying, "There's definitely going to be some English lit fans that are not going to be happy, but you really don't need to be accurate. It's just a book. That is not based on real life. It's all art."
