Daryl and Carol will have a lot to deal with when *The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon* returns with season 3. There will be zombies, of course. There will be another storm out on the open seas. There will be human adversaries with resources beyond imagination. But first, the dynamic duo will have to contend with something else entirely — hot dogs.
And not just any hot dogs, but canned hot dogs. The dogs in question come into play as a big souvenir obtained by Melissa McBride's Carol during her trek with Daryl (Norman Reedus) through the Chunnel from France to England, and those hot dogs will be referenced early and often during the season. The very first line of the premiere? About hot dogs. And the cooked sausages will continue to hover over the events of the entire block of seven episodes. But… like, why?
"Hot dogs are important in season 3," says showrunner David Zabel, laughing. "They represent sustenance, they represent nourishment, and they represent the United States of America to some extent. And the idea of home. So that becomes kind of a funny stand in between Daryl and Carol, because this can of hot dogs becomes an important prop for them that symbolizes the time when they feel they'll be on their way home."

You've heard of saving something for a rainy day. Well, in this case, the thing worth saving is a can of hot dogs, but the thing they are saving it *for* is when they can finally begin their journey back home to the U.S.
"The hot dog sort of becomes a symbol," explains Reedus. "It's like, 'Let's save 'em and we're going to celebrate with these hot dogs.'"
The mystery meat in question becomes not just a symbol, but a comedic shorthand between Daryl and Carol when reminding themselves of their ultimate goal. "It's a really funny running point throughout the season," McBride noes. "It's just a cute little lighter touch. It's really something to look forward to, is what that is. 'We'll keep this for that day.' It's something that we're going to look forward to."
Does Carol have a new 'Walking Dead' love interest on 'Daryl Dixon'?

'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon' star Norman Reedus says season 3 has a 'Tatooine mixed with Don Quixote vibe'

But is eating a *definitely* expired can of hot dogs really something to look forward to? "I don't know if you saw a closeup of that can, but it was so dented and rusted and did not look like the last meal you were hoping to have," says Reedus with a chuckle. "But we're down to eating a piece of candy at one point so it's like, 'Maybe we should eat those. It'll probably kill us anyway. What the f---!'"
McBride is also suspicious of any possible character consumption of the questionable food. "Just be careful of those canned hot dogs," she advises. "Especially when they're, you know, 14 years old! What a horrible way to go that would be. You live that long, and you survive that long, and then you just open up a bad can of hot dogs."

But the season 3 hot dogs aren't just empty calories. *Walking Dead* chief content officer Scott M. Gimple teases that there will also be some proverbial meat on the bone… even if hot dogs happen to be boneless. "I'll give you a spoiler about non-spoilage," Gimple says, not being able to resist the pun. "You wouldn't think that hot dogs could be of great importance, but they do symbolize something pretty intense and come to be a point of one of the ultimate moral choices of the season."
In the end, McBride is not only happy to share the new season 3 story with fans, but would like to share her hot dogs as well, and believes there is a marketing opportunity to be had. "I think that those hot dogs should be made available to everyone!" she proposes. "That artwork on the can is kind of nice too."
Ummmm… we'll pass, thanks.
*The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon* season 3 premieres Sept. 7 on AMC.
