Just like the show's fans, *9-1-1* is finding ways to move on while still honoring the memory of Bobby Nash.
The Station 118 fire captain (played by Peter Krause on the first-responder drama for eight seasons) died so his team could live through a deadly contagion exposure in the final episodes leading up to the season 8 finale earlier this year.
"I think what was important was that we didn't want to disrespect Bobby's sacrifice, but to show that his legacy lives on — even after he does," *9-1-1* showrunner Tim Minear tells ** of returning to the writers' room this summer to figure out "What the hell is season 9?"
And now, EW has an exclusive first look at one physical way the series will honor its fallen hero (and lead).

While the 118 ended the season without a captain, they do have a new name: the "Captain Robert W. Nash Memorial Station 118," as seen on a commemorative plaque in the exclusive season 9 photo above.
"Gave his life while on duty proudly serving the citizens of Los Angeles," the plaque continues.
Rob Lowe would reprise '9-1-1: Lone Star' role on '9-1-1: Nashville': 'Waiting for my phone to ring'

Angela Bassett thought it was her '9-1-1' character who'd be killed off

"It just felt fitting and right," Minear says of honoring Bobby/Peter Krause in this way. "There's a balance you have to strike. You don't want to come in and feel like everything is just going to be sad from here on out, but Bobby's memory should be blessed. And this is a thing that fire departments do in real life. They will name a fire station after a fallen hero. I think the idea that this will always be 'Bobby's house' is kind of beautiful, and not depressing."**

Bobby's death was something Minear and team had been secretly planning for months ahead of last May's shocking development.
"The decision about who to do it to, that was the hard one. But I just felt like, 'If I'm going to do this, I need to do it in such a way that it will have the maximum effect for every character story.' And so it's Bobby, right? I mean, that's going to affect everybody," Minear told EW at the time. "It also made sense for me in terms of it not being an arbitrary death. In a way, it is the tragic, logical culmination of his arc. He came to L.A. with a death wish, and then he learned to love life again. And then when he finally has to make the sacrifice, it's not because he wants to go, it's because it's the thing he has to do. It is true redemption. So everything about it lined up."
Not that it was any easier for fans — or the cast.

Kenneth Choi as Chimney on '9-1-1' season 8.
"I mean, I f---ing filmed it and I was still sobbing uncontrollably with my friend for like three or four minutes," Kenneth Choi — who plays Chimney — told EW, "to the point where I started to laugh at myself, because it was uncontrollable sobbing. I was laughing at myself saying, 'I don't know what is happening! I know this isn't real! Why am I acting like this?' But it was devastating to me."
*9-1-1* season 9 premieres Thursday, Oct. 9, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
