There wasn't a spell in the world that could've helped Domhnall Gleeson on his first day on the *Harry Potter *set. **

The Irish actor, who starred as the eldest Weasley brother Bill in the film series, explained during a recent visit to *Late Night* that his attempts to pull off his character's English accent went completely off the rails during his first few scenes. **

"My first day on that set, I was meant to be doing an English accent," Gleeson explained to host Seth Meyers. "They'd all been doing it — I was in the seventh and eighth movies, only a small part. And… I went Australian. And I couldn't stop."

In fact, he was so aggressively Australian that the director of the final two *Harry Potter* films, David Yates, had to speak with him about it. **

"I went Australian on the first take and there was like 300 people on set and the director was there like, 'Cut!' And this weird, long pause," Gleeson recalled. "And then the director came over and he was like, 'So you've gone Australian.'" **

It wasn't just Yates that had noticed his drawl, either. **

"Everyone knows he's gone Australian. And I was like, 'No, I know,'' he teased, adopting an Australian accent. "And he was like, 'Is there anything you can do about it?' 'Not really mate. I think this is what we're doing.'"

Gleeson continued, "It was shocking. It was one of the worst days of my life. And then things got a little bit better. And so I hope my American accent in this [*The Paper*] is better, but you tell me!"

Meyers joked that it's especially tough when adapting a book to screen "because you can't have your agent call in and be like, 'Could it be Australian?'" **

"Well, I was also playing one of the Weasley brothers, so he's got bright red hair," Gleeson replied. "If he's Australian, Mrs. Weasley has been doing some[thing], you know what I mean? Something's been up."

Gleeson starred as Bill in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*, which was split into two parts and released in 2010 and 2011. A curse-breaker by trade, Bill returned to help Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and the Order of the Phoenix — which included Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), brothers Ron (Rupert Grint), Fred (James Phelps), George (Oliver Phelps), and sister Ginny (Bonnie Wright) — face off against the evil Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) and his Death Eaters in the deadly Battle of Hogwarts.

His character is one of the few Weasley children that has not yet been officially cast in the upcoming *Harry Potter* television adaptation. Alastair Stout has been cast as Ron, with Tristan and Gabriel Harland joining him as Fred and George, Ruari Spooner as Percy, and Gracie Cochrane as Ginny.

These days, Gleeson has traded his wand for a quill on Peacock's newest sitcom,* The Paper*. The series, which is a spinoff of the American version of *The Office*, was recently renewed for a second season ahead of its Sept. 4 debut. **
