Cardi B has been found not liable in a civil assault trial, and will therefore not have to pay damages to a security guard who sued her.
A Los Angeles area jury found in favor of the "Bodak Yellow" rapper in a swift verdict Tuesday after attorneys for Cardi and the security guard, Emani Ellis, presented their closing arguments, according to the Associated Press. Representatives for Cardi didn't immediately return **'s request for comment.
Ellis had accused the musician, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, of assault and battery and infliction of emotional distress in a lawsuit filed in 2020, alleging that Cardi physically attacked her, cut her face with her fingernails so badly she needed plastic surgery, and spat on her during an incident at an obstetrician's office in 2018.
During testimony last week, Ellis also claimed that during the "traumatizing" ordeal, Cardi spat on her, berated her, and body-shamed her. "She was like, 'F‑‑‑ you, you fatass, I'm gonna beat your ass. I'm gonna get you fired. That's why you do security,'" Ellis said on the stand. "She was sticking her tongue out, flailing her arms up and down."

The rapper, meanwhile, testified that while things got very heated, no touching occurred between the two parties. "She couldn't get a scratch from me because I didn't touch her," Cardi said on the stand, per the AP.**
When Ellis' attorney asked Cardi if she had been angry, she replied, "Yes I was angry! Because I'm pregnant! And this girl's about to beat my ass!"**
She admitted the argument was very heated, with swearing and the two even facing off "chest-to-chest," but said it never got to the point of physical contact. "She didn't touch me," Cardi B testified. "She was going to touch me, but she didn't get to touch me."

The "WAP" performer told the court she was keeping her pregnancy a secret at the time because "I was getting used to things. I was just so worried about what everybody was saying and thinking. I thought I was letting a lot of people down." She also cited a desire for privacy with regards to medical matters, "especially something so sacred as a pregnancy. It's yours."

Thus, when Cardi B believed that Ellis was filming her, she feared the security guard would tell the world she was pregnant. "I told her, 'Why are you recording?'" she testified, "and she said, 'Oh my bad.' She practically apologized."
Ellis, who lost her job after the incident, was suing for medical expenses, compensation for emotional and physical suffering, and lost wages, in addition to punitive damages. The amount was not specified in the suit, but Cardi said from the stand that Ellis was "suing me for $24 million."
