- Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman says the depiction of Hollywood executives in *The Studio* is "horses‑‑‑."

- He also admitted that the show contains "a kernel of brilliant, blinding truth."

- Rothman also said that he referenced the show during a CinemaCon presentation earlier this year.

The CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group recently shared his thoughts on Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Hollywood satire series, which stars Rogen a bright-eyed executive who struggles to run the fictional Continental Studios.

"In each one of those episodes, there is a kernel of brilliant, blinding truth, and that's what makes great satire," Rothman said in an interview with Letterboxd. "The show is wonderfully satiric."

But "besides that kernel," the studio chief said, "everything else is horses‑‑‑. Maybe some days, but most days we're not morons."

Rothman clarified that he managed to view the Apple TV+ series "with the sense of humor intended," and noted that he referenced the show during a presentation earlier this year. "When I took the stage a few months ago at CinemaCon, I walked out and said, 'Hi, everybody, I'm Seth Rogen!' which was good for a laugh there," he said, referring to Rogen's character, Continental exec Matt Remick, presenting at the Las Vegas exhibitors' conference in the last two episodes of the show's first season.

The Sony head also said he thinks The *Studio* is accurate in its depiction of Remick maintaining his passion for cinema despite his persistent mistakes and questionable ideas. "What it gets right is that there's a fundamental truth of studio executives trying to do the right thing, and there being many, many obstacles to doing [so]," Rothman opined. "The difference there is it depicts a great deal of moral compromise in pursuing that. That's not really the way it is. Most people are people like me, who love movies, have a lot of integrity and are just trying to do the best we can."

Rogen previously explained his perspective on the executives who inspired him to create the show in an interview with EW.

"I've befriended a lot of these kinds of people over the years — I've been in their weddings, I go to their birthday parties, and I've seen that a lot of them love movies just as much as we do," the *Knocked Up* star said. "But they are unfortunately at this inflection point of art and commerce, and they're almost daily put in a position where they have to choose between self-preservation and enabling creative freedom. It's something that I personally relate to at times as somebody [who] produces a lot of things, and is, in some ways, financially and logistically responsible for these things being made."

Rogen also said that Griffin Mill — the unpredictable, laid-back executive above Matt in the Continental barking order who is portrayed by Bryan Cranston — was directly inspired by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

"He's much more like Bryan in this," Rogen said of Zaslav. "He's kinda like a mover and a shaker, and he's like a fun guy, and he knows his reputation, so he wants to present himself as kind of cool and loose. But the things he's saying are anything but!"

He continued, "That dichotomy of being a cool Hollywood guy who is spewing the most commercial, anti-creative words you could possibly be saying at any given moment — that actually rang much more true to our experiences in Hollywood, and made the character much less like a caricature and more like what these guys are actually like."**
