Lorna Raver, the veteran actress known for her small but memorable role as an elderly woman who curses a promotion-seeking loan officer in the hit horror movie *Drag Me to Hell*, died May 12. She was 81.

Her former agent, Michael Greene, confirmed Raver's death to ** and remembered her as "a beautiful lady." He added that Raver's *Drag Me to Hell* role marked "the height of her career."

Born in 1943 in York, Pa., Raver moved to New York City at the end of the 1970s to pursue a career in acting. She got her start on stage with a part in the Off Broadway debut of Robin Swicord's *Last Days of the Dixie Girl Café*.

After a brief stint in Chicago, Raver's career truly began to take root in Los Angeles, which set the actress on a path that would lead to prolific guest appearances and on-off TV spots. Throughout the 1990s, Raver appeared as receptionists, judges, doctors, PTA moms, and more on series like *Beverly Hills, 90210*; *The Practice*; *Felicity*; *Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman*; and *The Bold and the Beautiful*.

That latter appearance, as an unnamed receptionist on the CBS soap, led to a substantial part on its sister series, *The Young and the Restless*, in 2006. For two years, Raver played Rebecca Kaplan, a Holocaust survivor and mother to Don Diamont's Brad Carlton, a role she took over from veteran actress Millie Perkins.**

Raver continued to star as faith healers, nuns, and professors on series like *Weeds*, *One Tree Hill*, and *Grey's Anatomy*, but her signature role came via a call from Sam Raimi in 2009. The *Evil Dead* director was looking for an actress able to summon enough unhinged ferocity to play Mrs. Ganush, the spurned old woman who summons the demonic antagonist of *Drag Me to Hell*.

"It was a blast. I had no anticipation I would enjoy it so much," she later said of the role, which required Raver to punch, kick, bite, scream, and vomit at the bank employee (Alison Lohman) who disrespected her by rejecting a humble plea. "Horror is not my genre necessarily. So I was intrigued by it, and I thought it would certainly be an interesting adventure, but I wasn't sure until we really got going with the production how I felt about it. Of course, I came to love it."
