*The Summer I Turned Pretty *star is well aware that his character, Jeremiah Fisher, is not the internet's favored brother when it comes to winning Belly's heart — and he's doing his best to take it all in stride.

"They tend to dislike him, yes," Casalegno told *The New York Times,* when asked his feelings on playing a character who might be "the internet's most hated boyfriend." Since the new season premiered, he's made sure to dodge the negative commentary, noting, "I don't check Instagram anymore, so I really haven't seen that much hate. The only thing that I see is my sister sending me the memes that are really funny."

Hilarious memes aside, he added, "I think it's important to also understand and realize that this is a fictional story — and it's also not me."

Casalegno's Jeremiah is one point on the very messy love triangle at the center of Jenny Han's beloved book series, *The Summer I Turned Pretty* and its Amazon Prime adaptation of the same name. The story follows Isabel "Belly" Conklin (Lola Tung) and the Fisher brothers, Jeremiah and Conrad (Christopher Brinley), who are both in love with her. And despite what the haters are saying, Jeremiah is currently winning the war for Belly's heart: The pair are engaged and the third and final season has largely revolved around the upcoming nuptials.

While fans always had strong opinions about which brother they were backing, this season has proven to be an uphill battle for Jeremiah fans, as the frat boy has become the butt of every joke and meme. Whether it's trolling his dancing skills, calling out his lies, or turning a wedding cake rant into a viral TikTok sound, fans can't get enough when it comes to making fun of Jeremiah.

Ahead of the season premiere, Amazon Prime attempted to preempt this with a statement asking viewers to abstain from bullying on social media: "Cousins is our safe place. Everything good, everything magical. Let's keep the conversation kind this summer."

Casalegno praised the streamer for making a move, but noted that it hasn't slowed down the hate. "I don't think there's a single human being in the world who can carry the emotional negativity to the degree that stuff like this happens. And I think that's why Amazon did a good job of stepping in and being like, 'Hey, no bullying,'" he said. "Though, not really going so well."

As for Jeremiah's hate-worthy behavior, Casalegno has yet to experience it for himself. "I honestly haven't even really watched any of the show. Because, you know, when you're in it, you know what's happening. And so it's like: Why?," he said. "At the end of the day, it's work — it's an amazing job, a dream job — but it is still work."

Casalegno added that while it's "pretty comical" to have fans come up to him to express their hatred of Jeremiah, he was excited about the character from the very moment he read the first script.

"I was like, 'Oh, wow, this dude seems really fun.' It was very much like sunshine and golden retriever vibes," he recalled. "And I had seen Jenny Han's work in the past, and I felt like this would be a great project to be a part of. I wasn't wrong."**
