Channing Tatum is laying a strong foundation for a potential awards season run for *Roofman*, as the star has scored one of the first major Oscars precursor accolades on the trail.

The Toronto International Film Festival on Wednesday named the 45-year-old as one of the recipients of the 2025 TIFF Tribute Performer Awards, with the *Magic Mike *actor joining the likes of recent Oscar winners who first earned TIFF performance awards like Brendan Fraser (*The Whale*), Anthony Hopkins (*The Father*), Jessica Chastain (*The Eyes of Tammy Faye*), and Joaquin Phoenix (*Joker*).

Others recent stars who've won TIFF Tribute honors for performances and went on to score Oscar nominations include Colman Domingo (*Sing Sing*) and Benedict Cumberbatch (*The Power of the Dog*).

In addition to Tatum, who plays real-life former fugitive Jeffrey Manchester in the upcoming *Roofman*, TIFF will also honor *Hedda* actress Nina Hoss (*TÁR*) with the other 2025 TIFF Tribute Performer Award.

Non-performance accolades set to be presented by TIFF at its 2025 awards gala include the Impact Media prize (Idris Elba), the *Variety* Artisan Award (Kazu Hiro), the Special Tribute Awards (Jafar Panahi and Zacharias Kunuk), and the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award (Catherine O'Hara).

Previously announced recipients slated to accept prizes at the 2025 TIFF Tribute Awards ceremony include *Frankenstein* director Guillermo del Toro, *A Private Life* actress Jodie Foster, *Rental Family *and *Beef* helmer Hikari, and *Squid Game* star Lee Byung-hun.

Outside of the TIFF Tribute Awards, the Canadian film festival has long positioned itself as a momentous portent for the Academy Awards. Each year, the festival heralds a new TIFF People's Choice winner, with the recipient often going on to win or be nominated for Best Picture at the following year's Oscar ceremony.

Last year, *The Life of Chuck* broke a 12-year streak, becoming the only TIFF People's Choice Awards recipient since 2011 to not go on to compete in the Oscars' Best Picture category. But it was not released until June this year, making it eligible for the 2026 ceremony.

The two runners-up, however, fared better with Oscar voters, as* Emilia Pérez* received 13 overall Academy Award nominations, while *Anora* won Best Picture, Best Actress (Mikey Madison), Best Director (Sean Baker), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.

TIFF's Tribute Awards ceremony — a fundraising gala aimed at honoring cinematic excellence — will be held Sunday, Sept. 7 at the Fairmont Royal York, with past winner Fraser returning to the event to serve as the Honorary Chair for the evening.

The 2025 Toronto International Film Festival runs Sept. 4-14.
