Angus Cloud's tragic death at 25 shocked Hollywood in 2023. But the young actor's uncle says his family was all too familiar with his increasingly turbulent battle against drug addiction, though they felt powerless to save him.

"Those last few weeks he probably OD'd at least three or four times," recalled Kevin Cloud, the uncle of the rising star born Conor Angus Cloud Hickey, on A&E's new two-hour documentary special *Fame and Fentanyl*. "He was gonna keep abusing opioids until he died."

Angus Cloud is best known for his role on HBO's *Euphoria *as Fezco O'Neill, the kindly drug dealer and loyal friend to series star Rue (Zendaya). Fezco was his first-ever screen role, and the impression he made on audiences led to larger projects. But privately, he was waging battles against grief and physical pain that led him to drugs, and turned his family life upside down.

"His mom Lisa was unable to sleep because she had to go keep checking on him to see if he was alive," Kevin Cloud shared, recalling the last few months of his nephew's life. "I said to Lisa, 'If it hadn't been the first of the month it would have been the sixth of the month, or the tenth of the month. That's just the way he was headed."

Angus Cloud died at his family home in Oakland on July 31, 2023. The Alameda County Coroner's Office later revealed that the actor died of an accidental overdose, discovering a mix of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and benzodiazepines in his system at the time of his death.

Kevin Cloud said he can still recall that day, which started with an urgent message from Angus' mother. "The saddest text I ever got in my life," he said.

"I think I was the first person there after the first 911 responders had arrived. The paramedics arrived and went, 'Uh, no. This isn't for us, this is for the coroners' wagon.' The coroners came in, one of the boys helped them zip him into the bag and carry him out of his bedroom and down to the wagon. I parked myself on the front porch and basically sat there for three days," he recalled.**

Though he said the family was aware of the star's worsening relationship with drugs, and often felt helpless in the face of the addiction, Kevin Cloud insisted that he "didn't have any sense at all that [Angus] intended to leave this world."

After the actor's death, details of the struggles which led to his addiction and the lengths his loved ones went to in order to help him began to emerge.

*Euphoria* creator Sam Levinson previously shared that he staged multiple interventions for Angus, even getting HBO to pay for a 30-day inpatient rehab program, with three additional months of outpatient treatment.

Lisa Cloud shared with PEOPLE that same month that her son battled for years against chronic pain from an injury sustained to his head as a child. In the year before his death, he also injured his ankle, and in May 2023, his father died just three months after being diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer.

"He was in a lot of pain, and he had a job to do as an actor. Between the headaches and the ankle pain, it was a fair amount of motive to take painkillers. So, opioids," Kevin Cloud shared in the doc, adding that his nephew was "very close" with the family. "They loved each other helplessly. After his father died, by that time, he had come routinely to be kind of a mess," he said.

The *Euphoria *star was widely eulogized by his castmates, including Sydney Sweeney, who called him "an open soul, with the kindest heart," and Zendaya, who paid tribute to the "boundless light, love and joy he always managed to give us."

Two years after the performer's death, Kevin Cloud mournfully shared, "The hole in our lives left by him is just so painful. He was in my heart and now he's gone."

*Fame and Fentanyl *is currently streaming on A&E.
