10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Heath Ledger as Patrick Verona, Allison Janney as Ms. Perky, and Julia Stiles at Kat Stratford in '10 Things I Hate About You'.
Buena Vista Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection
The 20th century ended on a high, at least as far as rom-coms are concerned. Starring some of the hottest young talent of the late-'90s, *10 Things I Hate About You* reimagines William Shakespeare's beloved play *The Taming of the Shrew *as a high school love story. Cameron James (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) falls in love with Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik), but learns she isn't allowed to date until her older sister, Kat (Julia Stiles), does. After Cameron manages to convince the high school bad boy, Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), to woo Kat, Padua High School finds itself overrun with hormones and hijinks.**
A classic rom-com with a killer soundtrack, *10 Things I Hate About You* is the only film to answer the question of what would happen if Shakespeare went to high school in Seattle. —*Ilana Gordon***

Crush (2022)
Rowan Blanchard as Paige Evans in 'Crush'. Brett Roedel/Hulu/Courtesy Everett Collection
Paige Evans' (Rowan Blanchard) only experience with love is her passion for art, but when she's forced to join the high school track team to avoid suspension, she gets a lucky chance to hang out with her secret crush, Gabby (*Love, Victor*'s Isabella Ferreira). But no matter how fast Paige runs toward the affection of Miller High's It Girl, her feelings for another teammate — Gabby's sister, AJ (Auli'i Cravalho) — swiftly catch up to her.
With its charming storytelling and abundance of drama (both on and off screen), *Crush *is an LGBTQ+ rom-com that captures the beauty of queer joy and first love.*—James Mercadante*

**Cast:** Rowan Blanchard, Auli'i Cravalho, Isabella Ferreira, Tyler Alvarez, Teala Dunn
Easy A (2010)
Emma Stone as Olive Penderghast in 'Easy A'.
Adam Taylor/Columbia
A play on Nathaniel Hawthorne's *The Scarlet Letter*, *Easy A* tells the story of Olive (Emma Stone), a high school student whose sex life becomes the talk of the school after she lies about sleeping with some of her fellow students to help them avoid bullying and increase their popularity. No good deed goes unpunished, though; the more notoriety Olive receives, the more her fellow students are determined to take her down.
As Olive's lies compound upon themselves and she becomes the school scapegoat, it's up to her to figure out how to resuscitate her reputation, with the help of her crush and her eccentric parents. One of Stone's breakout lead roles, EW's critic writes that she "has a speed and sparkle that may remind you of [Lindsay] Lohan in her *Mean Girls* prime." —*I.G.***

Father of the Bride (1991)
Steve Martin as George Banks and Kimberly Williams-Paisley as Annie Banks in 'Father of the Bride'.

When it comes to feel-good wedding flicks, *Father of the Bride* takes the cake. Nancy Meyers' '90s remake of the 1950 Spencer Tracy classic follows George Banks (Steve Martin), an athletic shoe magnate whose world flips when his daughter, Annie (Kimberly Williams-Paisley), returns from studying abroad with a fiancé she's known for all of three months.
From awkward meet-and-greets with the future in-laws to getting swallowed whole by the pandemonium of caterers, florists, and one unforgettable wedding planner named Franck Eggelhoffer (Martin Short), George is forced to face the fact that his little girl isn't so little anymore — and he, too, has to embrace life's new chapters. —*J.M.*

Fire Island (2022)
Bowen Yang as Howie and Joel Kim Booster as Noah in 'Fire Island'.
Jeong Park Searchlight Pictures/20th Century Studios
A group of queer besties take a trip to Fire Island every year, but when they discover it may be their last, they double down on their goal of a hardcore week of partying. Noah (Joel Kim Booster, who also wrote the screenplay) is committed to helping his friend Howie (Bowen Yang) get some action, but he quickly finds that playing matchmaker is a thankless task, especially under the seemingly judgmental eye of a new acquaintance (Conrad Ricamora).
EW's critic says it best: "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a very small swimsuit must be in want of a rom-com to call his own; *Fire Island* sets the stage, messy and sweet, and lets its freak flag fly." *—Angela Andaloro*

Friends With Benefits (2011)
Justin Timberlake as Dylan Harper and Mila Kunis as Jamie Rellis in 'Friends With Benefits'. Screen Gems
With a similar plot to *No Strings Attached* — and released in the same year (though it received notably better notices than *Strings*) — *Friends With Benefits* tells the story of friends who decide to add sex into the equation. The rom-com stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as a pair of hot singles who become close friends and enjoy some zero-commitment hookups, only to find themselves developing feelings for each other. Naturally, both parties deny such feelings out loud, but it's impossible to deny the chemistry between them.
Called by EW's critic "an outrageously synthetic confection that pleases and entertains in its very froth," *Friends With Benefits* may unfold in relatively predictable fashion, but sometimes that's exactly what you need from a diverting rom-com. —*Kevin Jacobsen***

Garden State (2004)
Zach Braff as Andrew Largeman in 'Garden State'. Everett Collection
Zach Braff's *Garden State* is not a perfect movie. Following a struggling young actor's return home to New Jersey after his mother dies, the film interrogates themes like mental illness, medication, growing up, and falling in love, sometimes nailing the sentiments and other times falling short. Despite its deficits, the romantic comedy was a sleeper hit when it premiered in 2004, a reception attributable to the film's excellent soundtrack, objectively sick cast, and resonance with a young generation staring down the barrel of adulthood.
Starring Braff as Andy, the film's protagonist, and Natalie Portman as his eccentric and compulsively dishonest love interest, the film is often compared to *The Graduate* (1967), but remains a singular romantic comedy that demands an emotional reaction from its audience. —*I.G.*

Happiest Season (2020)
Aubrey Plaza as Riley and Kristen Stewart as Abby in 'Happiest Season'. Lacey Terrell/Hulu
Abby Holland (Kristen Stewart) and Harper Caldwell (Mackenzie Davis) are happy in their relationship, nearly a year in. So happy, in fact, that Abby's ready to pop the question during their cozy holiday with Harper's family. She's in for a surprise, however, when she realizes her soon-to-be fiancé hasn't come out to her conservative parents. Now, Abby must navigate the delicate secrets of the Caldwell family if she wants to fight for the woman she loves.
Marking Hulu's first LGBTQ+ holiday rom-com, *Happiest Season *isn't perfect (much like familial relationships), but it gleams with a festive cheer that's enjoyable to stream all year round. *—A.A.*

The Hating Game (2021)
Lucy Hale as Lucy Hutton in 'The Hating Game'. Vertical Entertainment/Courtesy Everett Collection
The two CEOs at this publishing company would be useless without their faithful assistants, who happen to hate each other's guts. Lucy (Lucy Hale) believes in bringing great fashion and an even better attitude to the office, but much to her dismay, her co-worker Joshua (Austin Stowell) has an opposite approach. And their cutthroat competitiveness only intensifies when an enticing managing editor position opens up.
Based on Sally Thorne's best-selling romance novel of the same name,* The Hating Game* may lean into the predictable enemies-to-lovers trope, but that doesn't make it any less charming. *—A.A.*

It's Complicated (2009)
Meryl Streep as Jane Adler and Steve Martin as Adam Schaffer in 'It's Complicated'.
Melinda Sue Gordon/Universal
You can expect three things from a Nancy Meyers film: romance, comedy, and superior kitchens. The Meyers trifecta is on full display in *It's Complicated*, where Meryl Streep stars as Jane Adler, a successful bakery owner whose amicable relationship with her ex-husband, Jake (Alec Baldwin), takes a detour back into the romantic after a decade apart. Steve Martin supports in the role of Jane's other romantic interest, and Lake Bell appears as Jake's younger wife.**
A broad comedy distinguished by its excellent cast and focus on romanticizing the love and sex lives of middle-aged people, *It's Complicated* keeps its story and message simple. But it does so in such a homey aesthetic and well-executed style, it still feels like a treat. —*I.G.***

No Hard Feelings (2023)
Andrew Barth Feldman as Percy and Jennifer Lawrence as Maddie in 'No Hard Feelings'.
Macall Polay/Sony Pictures Entertainment
Jennifer Lawrence is such an accomplished dramatic actress, but her comedic chops are rock solid, and she gets to show them off in the 2023 raunch-com *No Hard Feelings*. Lawrence plays Maddie Barker, a struggling thirtysomething who agrees to seduce a wealthy couple's introverted 19-year-old (Andrew Barth Feldman) in exchange for a car.
The premise is simple, but the execution is designed to let Lawrence play in ways we haven't seen since *Silver Linings Playbook*. From taking throat punches to brawling naked, the Oscar winner manages to balance the physical comedy of the film while still centering the story's emotional heart. As EW's critic writes, *No Hard Feelings *is "a reminder that Lawrence is one [of] Hollywood's best (and funniest) leads." *—I.G.*

Palm Springs (2020)
Cristin Milioti as Sarah Wilder and Andy Samberg as Nyles in 'Palm Springs'. Jessica Perez/Hulu
This sci-fi-meets-rom-com flick stars Andy Samberg as Nyles, who's on his way to celebrate his buddies on their wedding day. The only problem? He's headed there again and again after getting stuck in a time loop in the desert, and things only get wilder when the maid of honor/sister of the bride, Sarah (Cristin Milioti), gets stuck there with him.
This unexpected take on the romance genre is chock-full of nihilism and existential dread as the pair desperately seeks a return to normalcy, but it all works because of the excellent cast. EW's critic notably praises the two leads, as "Samberg nimbly walks the line between slacker cartoon and actual frustrated human" and Milioti "shines when given the chance to lead." *—A.A.*

Pretty Woman (1990)
Julia Roberts as Vivian Ward and Richard Gere as Edward Lewis in 'Pretty Woman'.
Buena Vista/Getty
If you haven't yet seen this '90s classic...big mistake! Big! Huge! Garry Marshall's flick spins a modern Cinderella story starring Julia Roberts as the scrappy, street-smart escort Vivian and Richard Gere as leverage buyout executive Edward, who offers her a taste of the high life in exchange for her company at social gatherings.
While it's undeniably a product of its time, the film was groundbreaking during its initial release, and its timeless appeal stems from the palpable chemistry between Gere and Roberts. Even EW's critic, who notoriously panned it with a D grade, had a change of heart 20 years later — bumping it to a B and describing *Pretty Woman *"as the rare Hollywood movie that doesn't just channel the culture but changes it." —*J.M.***

The Proposal (2009)
Ryan Reynolds as Andrew Paxton and Sandra Bullock as Margaret Tate in 'The Proposal'.
Sam Emerson/Disney

When Margaret's U.S. visa application is denied, she promises Andrew a promotion if he pretends to be her fiancé to avoid deportation. The impromptu plan takes them to his hometown in Sitka, Alaska, where Margaret discovers a side of him she never knew existed.
The onscreen chemistry between Reynolds and Bullock is intoxicating, while the supporting ensemble (Betty White, duh) brings a cozy warmth that makes this rom-com so damn rewatchable. —*J.M.***

Rye Lane (2023)
David Jonsson as Dom and Vivian Oparah as Yas in 'Rye Lane'. Everett Collection
Raine Allen-Miller's 2023 directorial debut refutes the notion that rom-coms have lost their sparkle, capturing the genre's trademark magic of grand gestures and love at first sight while injecting new life into it. When lovesick Dom (David Jonsson) cries in a gender-neutral bathroom stall, he's interrupted when an outgoing stranger named Yas (Vivian Oparah) overhears his faint sobs. The two embark on a day-long journey roaming the streets of South London's Rye Lane, bonding over their failed relationships and scheming chaos against their exes.
Similar to the story's dynamic pacing, Oparah and Jonsson radiate effervescence, as they seamlessly bounce off each other's energy while the mise en scène bursts with a kaleidoscope of experimental camerawork. *—J.M.*

Second Act (2018)
Jennifer Lopez as Maya and Milo Ventimiglia as Trey in 'Second Act'. Barry Wetcher/STXfilms
In *Second Act*, Jennifer Lopez plays Maya, a chain store employee whose 15 years of loyal service are ignored because she doesn't have a college degree. After her godson doctors her résumé, Maya lands a C-suite job at a beauty company and almost immediately makes an enemy out of the boss' daughter.
Operating on brains, talent, and common sense, Maya is determined to prove her worth, and she's got the support system to back her up (Leah Remini). A lighthearted rom-com for the oft-overlooked, EW's critic writes, "The movie plays to nearly all [Lopez's] strengths; not just as an actress, but as the ageless, impossibly glamorous superstar who still somehow retains the on-the-6 relatability of her Bronx Everygirl bona fides." *—I.G.*
