In the late 1970s, Jaclyn Smith was riding high on her fame from Charlie's Angels. The brunette beauty played Kelly Garrett on the ABC detective drama from 1976 to 1981 and was the only cast member to remain on the show for all five seasons.
Smith was successful enough to be picky about the roles she wanted to play, so when The Love Boat came calling in 1977, she said no. At first.
On the CW's TV We Love documentary series, Love Boat star Ted Lange revealed that producer Aaron Spelling wanted Smith to guest star on his new series so bad that he bribed her with a car.
"Sometimes in order to get a big star on the show, Aaron had to be very generous," Lange said, per Remind magazine. "Jackie Smith from Charlie's Angels — she didn't want to do our show. So, Aaron says 'What's your favorite car?' She says 'Jaguar. Green.' She got a Jaguar! Green!"
Smith appeared in the Love Boat Season 1 episode "A Tasteful Affair," playing Janette Bradford. And she got more than a car for her cameo. Smith's co-star in the episode, which aired on Oct. 1, 1977, was her then-beau Dennis Cole, who played a private eye tracking her character on the Pacific Princess. Smith and Cole, who met when he guest starred on Charlie's Angels, married one year later after their Love Boat epsidoe, in November 1978.

While Smith had to be coaxed to appear on The Love Boat, she had a second round on theTV cruise lineas part of a crossover episode on Charlie's Angels. In the 1979 episode "Love Boat Angels," the Angels took a cruise on the Pacific Princess to catch art thief Paul Hollister (Bert Convy). The episode marked the first appearance of Towsend Agency newcomer Tiffany Welles (Shelley Hack) and featured Love Boat regulars Lange, Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, Fred Grandy, and Lauren Tewes.
Four years after appearing with Cole on The Love Boat, Smith's marriage to the actor ended. Smith told People magazine that her Charlie's Angels fame put a strain on her marriage. "All the publicity contributed to the breakup," she said at the time. "I guess a man doesn't want competition, and I understand that. …I understood Dennis wanted to be the head of the house, and the papers were calling him 'Mr. Jaclyn Smith.'"
