Ten years after leaving it behind, Brooke Shields is riding back into Hope Valley.

On Thursday, the Hallmark Channel announced that Shields is set to rejoin *When Calls the Heart* for the show's upcoming 13th season. The actress will reprise her role of Charlotte Thornton across three episodes, returning to the series a decade after she first appeared on it.

"We're thrilled to welcome back Brooke Shields to the *When Calls the Heart* family," Michelle Vicary, Hallmark Media's head of programming, said in a statement. "Her first appearance on the series was memorable for our fans and we know the Hearties will be delighted to see Charlotte's emotional and heartwarming reunion."

Much has changed since Charlotte last galloped through Hope Valley, having boldly arrived on horseback to check in with her son Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing). The two-episode arc saw her meet Elizabeth (Erin Krakow), who would eventually marry Jack and become the mother of his son.

Since then, Jack was tragically killed in a landslide (Lissing departed the show after five seasons), and after mourning her husband, Elizabeth found love with Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry). When season 12 concluded, the family relocated to Charlotte's boarding home in Cape Fullerton so Elizabeth's diabetic son — Jack, named after his dad — could be closer to an insulin lab.

Charlotte will no doubt have something to say about the family's new normal — but the visit will also give her the chance to spend time with her grandson and help him connect with memories of his father.

Speaking to PEOPLE about her impending return, Shields admitted that adapting to the show's current 1922 timeline has been difficult "because the jump is just so extreme."

She continued, "But we're also seeing Charlotte evolve, which has been interesting. We create a path for her to modernize."

One of those changes involves Charlotte spending less time on horseback.

"She's not riding horses anymore, which is sort of sad because I really liked that," Shields said with a laugh. "I liked sort of swashbuckling in."
