- Netflix's *Unknown Number: The High School Catfish *was released on Friday, Aug. 29.

- It explores the true story of a teenage couple who endured years of anonymous cyberbullying.

- Several of its subjects are now gearing up for their first year at college.

Netflix's latest true crime documentary, *Unknown Number: The High School Catfish*, delves into the unsettling story of a relentless cyberbullying campaign that rocked a small Michigan town.

What began as a series of anonymous messages targeting a teenage girl and her boyfriend spiraled into a months-long investigation, ending in a devastating betrayal no one saw coming.

With the case solved and the documentary streaming, here's a look at where the people at the heart of the story are now — and how their lives have changed since the truth came out.**

After years of anonymous cyberbullying, teenager Lauryn Licari discovered the person behind the messages was her own mother, Kendra Licari.

*Unknown Number: The High School Catfish* includes body cam footage that captures the moment Lauryn finds out the truth. Though she stays silent, she later says that the "shock feeling turned into sad, which turned into mad, which turned into crazy."

Lauryn, who is now 18 years old, reveals that she hasn't seen Kendra since her arrest but says she hopes they can reconnect "when the time is right." She also wants her mom to get the help she needs now that she's out of prison.

"Being without that relationship is really hurting me," she says. "I think rebuilding our relationship will help both of us a lot. I love her more than anything."

In the final moments of the documentary, an intertitle states that Lauryn plans to study criminology in college.

She's also become particularly close to her father, Shawn, who now has full custody, according to The Cut. "We just bond so well together," Lauryn says. "In everything we do, we can find a way to laugh."

In August 2022, police searched Kendra Licari's home, where she confessed to sending the anonymous messages that tormented her daughter and her then-boyfriend.

She was arrested in December of that year and pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor. On April 26, 2023, Kendra was sentenced to 19 months to five years in prison. She was released on parole on Aug. 8, 2024.

Kendra remains under supervision until Feb. 2026, according to her inmate record from the Michigan Department of Corrections.

In the Netflix documentary, Kendra expresses regret for her actions, saying she's "very disappointed" in herself and feels she let her family down.

Due to a no-contact order, she and Lauryn haven't seen each other in a long* *time. "It's been about a year and a half since I've seen her," Kendra shares. "We both know that we're with each other no matter what. I definitely think we can have a healthy relationship. I know we both hold that bond that we have close."

As of January 2025, per The Cut, Kendra is divorced from Shawn and living with family near Detroit.

Shawn Licari wasn't home when police confronted Kendra, but body cam footage in *Unknown Number: The High School Catfish *shows him rushing back from work and learning that she was behind the anonymous harassment. To make matters worse, Shawn also learned that Kendra had neglected to tell him she'd been unemployed for over six months.

Speaking with the filmmakers, Shawn reflected on the betrayal. "I just can't believe she'd do something like that to her daughter," he says, noting that Kendra's actions "stabbed" him in the heart.

As reported by The Cut, Shawn has divorced Kendra and now has full custody of Lauryn. In the final moments of the documentary, he reflects on how much closer they've become, sharing that Lauryn now turns to him more often and is "growing up to be a beautiful woman."

Owen McKenny

"It's crazy how having a phone could become the worst thing that happened to me," Owen McKenny says at the start of *Unknown Number: The High School Catfish. *

Owen and Lauryn were flooded with anonymous texts daily, many of which were aggressive and vulgar. Many of these messages targeted Lauryn's insecurities and included graphic descriptions of sexual acts with Owen.

The teenage "golden couple" ended their relationship before the truth was revealed. By the end of the documentary, they revealed they no longer keep in touch.

Since then, Owen graduated from Beal City High School and plans to continue his education and baseball career at Hope College in Michigan, per FieldLevel.

Owen's best friend, Khloe Wilson, was suspected of sending the messages early in the investigation due to past tensions with Lauryn and bullying accusations. But with no evidence linking her to the messages, police came to suspect she was being framed.

The FBI later confirmed that Kendra sent the texts and had even impersonated Khloe on social media platforms like Snapchat to divert suspicion.

Khloe's parents are still outraged. "Khloe missed a whole godd--- year of what should have been some of the best memories of her life," her father says in the documentary. "[It was] a whole year of people pointing the finger at her [and] being grilled by her parents."

Khloe graduated from Beal City High School in May 2025, and committed to play volleyball at Montcalm Community College.

In a TikTok posted in September 2025, Khloe stood by her statements from the documentary, denying that she excluded Lauryn from a Halloween party and saying she didn't know about the cyberbullying until months later.
