It's easy to see why: Starring Cooper Raiff (who also wrote and directed the film), *Cha Cha Real Smooth* tells the story of Andrew, a recent college graduate who develops an unexpected connection with a 32-year-old single mother (Dakota Johnson) and her autistic daughter (Vanessa Burghardt).

Peppered with sharp observational humor — largely from Andrew's job as a "party starter" — *Cha Cha Real Smooth* is "a smartly constructed, amiably appealing coming-of-age zhuzhed up with mainstream marquee names," writes EW's critic, "and enough sharp edges to transcend the more familiar outlines of the script." —*Kevin Jacobsen***

Anora (2024)

It's obvious when watching *Anora* that writer-director Sean Baker never set out to make a Best Picture winner. Its profane sense of humor, small-scale production, and centering of a sex worker as a protagonist hardly seem up the Academy's alley. And yet, the brilliance of *Anora* is in the way Baker synthesizes all those elements to tell a hilarious yet profound story of a confident young woman (Mikey Madison) experiencing the highs of a whirlwind marriage and the subsequent lows of realizing her Cinderella story may not have a happy ending. —*K.J.***

Napoleon (Jon Heder), a sleepy-eyed teenage nerd growing up in Idaho, navigates the ups and downs of high school life with barely suppressed annoyance and a dose of self-delusion.

The ensemble includes a deeply awkward brother addicted to chat rooms, an uncle desperate to relive his varsity football days, and Napoleon's best friend Pedro (Efren Ramírez), who makes an unlikely run at class president. A tangled web of romance begins when new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) takes a liking to sophomore Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). But he cannot pursue her properly because of her father's strict rules: She can only date if her fiercely independent older sister, Kat (Julia Stiles), does first. Cameron then sets a plan in motion that results in mysterious bad boy Patrick (Heath Ledger) wooing Kat, as Cameron hopes to pull off his grand scheme and go out with Bianca.

Daniel Craig stars as Benoit Blanc, a Southern-drawling Hercule Poirot-style private detective who helps a wealthy family uncover the truth behind the death of their beloved patriarch (Christopher Plummer). Surrounding Craig is a fabulous troupe of actors reveling in their delicious characters, from Chris Evans to Toni Collette, though you'll likely leave thinking most about Ana de Armas (and her coffee mug) for reasons we won't spoil. Jack is unimpressed, but EW's critic appreciates the new cast members: "It turns out that Streisand has stumbled into a delicious third-quarter career, if she wants one, as an exuberantly less-than-perfect hot mama. Ron Burgundy is definitely in tune with his times, but once times change — like when a female journalist (Christina Applegate) is promoted to co-anchor — he responds with bewilderment and… well, more bewilderment. As tensions rise, Ron and Veronica's brutal knock-down fight in the middle of the newsroom is the perfect comic expression of the battle of the sexes. —*D.H.*

Jack Quaid stars as Nathan Caine, a man with congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis, which makes him extra cautious not to accidentally hurt himself in any way. After the woman he loves is held hostage during a robbery, Nathan springs into action and uses his condition as an asset as he goes down an ultraviolent path of revenge. The fun of *Novocaine* is in watching Quaid's commitment to the bit as the film pushes its premise to the extreme. —*K.J.***

EW's critic asserts that "Robbie is the real revelation. In a performance that goes far beyond bad perms and tabloid punchlines, she's a powerhouse: a scrappy, defiant subversion of the American dream.
