- Orlando Bloom said he was "the butt of most of the jokes" among the *Lord of the Rings* cast.
- The actor noted that Viggo Mortensen "would love to talk about my pretty hair."
- Bloom also recalled surfing with Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd during their days off.
Orlando Bloom is reflecting on his *Lord of the Rings* costars pulling Legolas' leg a lot.
The *Pirates of the Caribbean* star discussed Peter Jackson's epic adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels during a career retrospective at Fan Expo Chicago on Aug. 16. When asked about funny memories with the cast — which included the likes of Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, Liv Tyler, and Ian McKellen — Bloom said that his glamorous elf warrior, Legolas, was subject to great ridicule among his costars.
"I was the butt of most of the jokes, 'cause I never got dirty," Bloom remembered, laughing. "Legolas never gets blood, never gets dirty. Viggo would *love* to talk about my pretty hair, clean face and hands and nails and stuff. It was funny."

Bloom also remembered catching some waves with Wood, Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd during their time away from the set — though the *Kingdom of Heaven* star originally had other adventures in mind.
"I learned to surf with the hobbits," he said. "Initially, I was like, 'Let's get motorbikes and go riding in these hills.' And Billy Boyd was like, 'Uh, no!' And I was like, 'Mountain bikes?' 'No!' 'Okay, surfing?' And BIlly was like, 'Yeah, surfing!' Billy was the sensible one, probably."

Elijah Wood says 'Lord of the Rings' pay was not enough to 'rest easy for the rest of your life'

Once they settled on surfing, Bloom said that he embarked on weekend-long excursions with the quartet of halfling actors. "We'd rent a little bach and cook a barbecue and just go surf and stuff," he recalled. "It was really magical."
Bloom said that at the time, his unusual hairstyle helped him look more natural while riding the waves. "I had my crazy mohawk," he remembered. "I raised my hairline to make me look a bit more elven and older. They wouldn't have to do that now, 'cause my hair is receding. But they shaved me and kinda shaved it all the way back, so I had this mohawk, and it was pretty good for the surf look, too."

The actor lovingly reflected on the bond between his castmates. "I was 20 or 21 — we were all young," he said. "There was a lot of fun. We were a family of friends."

Bloom later returned to Middle-earth for the second and third *Hobbit* prequel movies, 2013's *The Desolation of Smaug* and 2014's *The Battle of the Five Armies*.
The franchise will soon return with another installment, *The Hunt for Gollum*, in 2027. The film will be directed by Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the original trilogy, and may see the return of Wood and McKellen, as the latter revealed that their respective characters, Frodo and Gandalf, are in the film.
