**This article contains spoilers for *The Summer I Turned Pretty* season 3 finale, "At Last."**

Everyone can finally relax, because *The Summer I Turned Pretty *creator Jenny Han confirms that Belly's (Lola Tung) dad John (Colin Ferguson) was not having an unexplained heart attack in the final episodes. "No, not at all!" Han tells ** with a laugh.

Congratulations on your positive diagnosis John, but where did this all confusion even come from?

Fans grew concerned near the end of the final season when John was searching for Pepcid in Laurel's (Jackie Chung) kitchen, complaining of persistent heartburn. He said he'd been feeling it all day long, and TV fans know that usually all but guarantees a character is about to suffer some level of a myocardial infarction.

But when John survived through the end of the series finale without ever mentioning his heartburn again, it left fans wondering why the show gave viewers a heart attack instead. A day after the series finale aired, Han tells EW that there actually was a reason. It just had nothing to do with John's physical heart, but rather his *emotional* one.

"It was a moment to show a couple who had known each other a very long time who were giving it another try and kind of falling back into their old dynamics of low-key annoyance," Han explains. "And no, it was not a product placement [either]."

The creator is well-aware of how much fans believe the final season included product placement for brand names, most notably for Apple AirTags after Belly used one to track down her stolen bag on her first day in Paris (most useful wedding gift ever). But Han says the show didn't have any kind of deals with brands featured in the episodes.

"A lot of people think that everything is product placement on the show, and I'll just say that I really like living in a real world, a real universe," Han adds. "And I would never say, 'Can you please pass me the heartburn medication?' You would just say like, 'Where's the Pepcid?' Or, you know, AirTags, like, that's just what she would have. To use a generic, random brand, it doesn't feel like I'm living in the real world."

That's why Belly talks about Pop-Tarts, eats brand name cereal, and goes to actual stores like Michaels. "It's just all real," Han says. "It's not product placement, we just use brands."

If those major brands then post about *The Summer I Turned Pretty *on social media, that's just an added bonus. No need to have a heart attack about it.
