John C. McGinley is officially scrubbing back in.
The actor, 66, is set to reprise his role as Dr. Perry Cox as a recurring guest star in the upcoming ABC revival of *Scrubs*, * *has learned. In addition to starring on *Scrubs*, McGinley will also star in HBO's upcoming untitled Steve Carell comedy series, co-created/exec produced by *Scrubs* creator Bill Lawrence, in which he also plays a college professor.
McGinley portrayed the acerbic attending physician who found himself as the unwilling mentor to the show's protagonist, J.D. Dorian (Zach Braff). He was among the smaller group of *Scrubs* cast members (including Braff and Donald Faison) who returned for the series' reimagined ninth season.

*Scrubs* originally ran from 2001-2010, garnering a broad and loyal fan base as well as industry recognition. The comedy received 17 Emmy nominations and won twice.
However, the series stalled out as the eighth season wound down to a planned series finale in 2009. That season's final two-part episode was actually titled "My Finale," but the show was resurrected in a slightly different form for a ninth and final season. Instead of being set at Sacred Heart Hospital, the series took place at a fictional med school and followed a group of students played by Kerry Bishé, Michael Mosley, Eliza Coupe, and Dave Franco. The subtitle "Med School"* *was* *affixed to the credits to denote the significant changes to the show.**
McGinley's Dr. Cox, who had become the chief of medicine at Sacred Heart Hospital by the eighth season, transitioned to being a professor when Sacred Heart was turned into a medical school in the ninth season.

Now, McGinley joins Faison, Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Judy Reyes as the *Scrubs* stars reprise their roles for the series continuation. In addition to the foursome, Lawrence is also attached as an executive producer.
"*Scrubs* means so very much to me," Lawrence said in a statement. "So excited for the chance to get the band back together."
An official logline for the series says that it will follow Braff's J.D. and Faison's Turk as they "scrub in together for the first time in a long time."
It continues, "medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way."

While visiting EW's video suite at San Diego Comic-Con in July, Chalke shared one of her dream plotlines for the upcoming series. **
"I can't tease any plot details because I don't know any because it's all so new," Chalke explained at the time. "Someone just asked me if I have any requests for the plots, and I just said, 'Flash mob. I wanna be in the flash mob.' So, I don't know how that works into the storyline, but I think there's a way."**
