*Game of Thrones* alum Sophie Turner will spelunk into a new globe-trotting role as she laces up the boots of iconic video game character Lara Croft.

Amazon announced Wednesday that the actress will lead Phoebe Waller-Bridge's upcoming live-action TV series adaptation of the iconic *Tomb Raider* video game franchise as Croft, a world-traveling explorer the *Fleabag* writer-star will re-envision for the upcoming show.

"I'm so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team. It's not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving," Waller-Bridge said in a statement. "Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out. Croft is coming."**

Turner paid tribute to past Laras of the big screen, as she joins the project after Oscar winners Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander played the role in movies released between 2001 and 2018.

"I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many — and I am giving everything I've got," Turner said. "They're massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can't wait for you all to see what we have cooking."

In addition to Turner, *Shōgun* helmer Jonathan Van Tulleken joined the series as director, while Chad Hodge will serve as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Waller-Bridge.

Amazon additionally confirmed that production on the series (in collaboration with game developer Crystal Dynamics) is set to begin on Jan. 19, 2026, with a release date still unconfirmed.

Upon the series' announcement, Amazon MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke promised that the show would contain "exhilarating adventures that honor the legacy of this iconic character," who changed the gaming industry when the legendary character challenged male-dominated trends as a female adventurer in her 1996 video game debut.

In 2022, Vikander told ** that a sequel to her financially successful 2018 outing as Croft (reportedly written by Misha Green) was in limbo amid the TV series.

"With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it's kind of politics," Vikander said at the time, referencing Amazon's multi-billion-dollar acquisition of MGM. "I think Misha and I have been ready, so it's kind of in somebody else's hands, to be honest."

The *Danish Girl *star's first go-round as Croft earned $274 million at the worldwide box office, roughly 17 years after Jolie ushered the character to the big screen in 2001's *Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,* which also earned virtually the same amount (unadjusted for inflation) in ticket sales in 2001. Jolie reappeared in a 2003 sequel, *The Cradle of Life*.
