**This article contains spoilers for *A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.***

One of the best scenes in *A Big Bold Beautiful Journey* didn't make the final cut, according to its stars, Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie.

The new fantasy romance (out now) follows David (Farrell) and Sarah (Robbie), who meet at a wedding and embark on a life-changing road trip, reliving important moments from their pasts through magical doorways. But some of their experiences on this journey won't be seen in theaters, as director Kogonada had to make some difficult cuts for time.

"There's another dance sequence that should make the extended director's cut," Robbie tells * *in an interview alongside her costar.**

Farrell explains that Kogonada created a scene where their characters perform a "contemporary interpretive dance" that tracks their journey through the film. While the filmmaker loved the idea, he wasn't sure if he could make it work within the script.

"And the film didn't really want it, apparently," Farrell adds with a laugh. "But oh my God, shooting that dance was one of the most beautiful experiences I've had in 25 years...It was really beautifully designed and a joy to just be open in that moment. It felt very unstructured, but it was really structured."

Compared to another dance scene that did make the movie, the actor says the cut sequence "was much more personal feeling."

Robbie laughs while noting that she and Farrell both predicted that the interpretive dance scene would be the best moment of the movie. She admits she spent a lot of time "building it up" in her mind before filming it, and they were proud of how well it turned out.

"This is the moment where everything makes sense for the character, and this is such an integral moment," she says, adding that she believed it was "going to be the defining thing. And then, I don't know, it wasn't that big of a moment."

Ironically, another dance scene that did make the final cut didn't seem as important on the page. "It was meant to be a nothing kind of moment — in the script, it was like, 'And they dance,' that's all it said," Robbie says.

However, the costars reveal that there was actually a lot more to that dance, which also ended up getting cut despite making the crew cry during filming.

When they filmed the scene, Farrell says the director played a "haunting" song that added to its emotional impact, so much so that tears started flowing behind the camera. "Some of the lads were really emotional," the actor recalls. "It was something about the piece of music, how beautiful the setting was, and everyone had kept up to speed on the story that we were telling in the way that it became personal."

"You know you've done something good when the grips are crying," Robbie says. "The whole moment was just so beautiful, and it kind of transcended everything that I imagined this part of the script was doing. It kind of became its own thing. I remember thinking it was amazing, and that ended up being on the cutting room floor."

"Yeah, you won't see that on Sept. 19," Farrell quips, making Robbie laugh again.

Additionally, several scenes featuring musical theater performances were either cut or trimmed. EW previously revealed that Farrell performs the opening number of *How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying *as his character revisits the night he starred in his high school musical. But it turns out that they actually shot a lot more than what will be shown onscreen.

"There are full numbers that we shot that you never see, which is a heartbreak for me," Kogonada says. "Because I would've made it a three-hour film and just shown [it all]. But at one point, we realized that it starts derailing the movie."

The final cut of the movie excluded two additional songs from the musical: "Happy To Keep His Dinner Warm" and "Coffee Break."

"We obviously did the first number with David, and then the next two numbers, we played it all out," the director reveals. "It was beautifully choreographed — I loved the choreography of ["Coffee Break"], it was my favorite. The choreographer, Galen Hooks, did a really unique take on it, and I thought it was really great, but just at that point it became [too much] about the high school musical."

As self-described "secret dorks" when it comes to theater, the director and stars loved putting the shows together because they felt like they were actually participating in a high school musical. Kogonada hopes to release the footage in some way in the future so others can enjoy what they created.

"It didn't feel like we were just doing it for the camera," he says. "And that group of actors who played the high schoolers, they really formed a bond. We dedicated a week to it. We filled that auditorium up — nowadays, with a crowd scene, they duplicate people, but we used a lot of our budget just to fill it up and have actual people watch it, and that was great."

Hopefully, the rest of us will be able to watch it too. Release the Kogonada cut!
