Charlie Hunnam is the new (old) face of horror.

In the first footage of *Monster: The Ed Gein Story*, Hunnam becomes the titular monster, putting on a mask of human skin.

The teaser trailer also shows a bit of what to expect from Laurie Metcalf as Ed's mother, Augusta, who chastises him offscreen, "You're working too fast!" "I'm sorry, Mother," he replies. "Just go slow and steady. Take your time, sweet boy," she says.

Known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, Gein — a body snatcher known for collecting human body parts — was only convicted of one murder in the 1950s, but he was suspected of many others.

From *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre* to Norman Bates in *Psycho* to Buffalo Bill in *The Silence of the Lambs*, Gein's macabre legacy has, per Netflix, given "birth to fictional monsters born in his image and ignited a cultural obsession with the criminally deviant. Ed Gein didn't just influence a genre — he became the blueprint for modern horror."

Netflix describes its take on Gein as a "serial killer," "grave robber," and "psycho," and says the series picks up "in the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin" where a "friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm – hiding a house of horrors so gruesome it would redefine the American nightmare."

The synopsis continues, "Driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother, Gein's perverse crimes birthed a new kind of monster that would haunt Hollywood for decades."

*The Ed Gein Story* is the third season in the *Monster* anthology, after *The Jeffrey Dahmer Story* and *The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story*, which together racked up 24 Emmy nominations and one win for Niecy Nash for supporting actress.

The streamer promises that the latest in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's anthology series is its most harrowing installment yet, and "tells the story of how one simple man in Plainfield, Wisconsin, became history's most singular ghoul. He revealed to the world the most horrific truth of all — that monsters aren't born, they're made...by us."
