*The Way of Water* gives way to *Fire and Ash*.
The first trailer for *Avatar: Fire and Ash*, the third Pandora-set sci-fi epic from director James Cameron, will arrive this weekend, attached to showings of Marvel's *The Fantastic Four: First Steps*. You may have already seen the footage, by way of bootleg leaks making the rounds online, though they were quickly pulled.
** was also part of a group of press who screened the trailer early at a Monday morning event out of Disney's New York City headquarters. (Yes, 3D glasses were required.) So here's what we can report.

Michelle Yeoh won't appear until 'Avatar 4,' James Cameron confirms (exclusive)
The big reveal in the upcoming *Avatar: Fire and Ash* trailer is the new clan of Na'vi, the Mangkwan Clan, also known as the Ash Clan. They are led by Varang (Oona Chaplin of *Game of Thrones*) and reside near an active volcano. Disney's 20th Century Studios released an early poster, giving audiences a glimpse of Varang, who's way creepier in the upcoming footage than she might appear.
Adorned with a red headdress and volcanic ash smeared across her face, she can hold fire in her hands painlessly. Much like the water-dwelling Na'vi of the Metkayina with the ocean, the Ash Clan seemingly developed a symbiotic relationship with fire.
The trailer presents the Ash Clan as the new adversaries to Jake (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their family — but particularly Neytiri. She and Jake quarrel to the point where he shouts, "You cannot live like this, baby...in hate!" Additional footage shows Neytiri in the air on the back of a Banshee, firing arrows at the Ash Clan, while Varang wields a flamethrower.

Varang even has a moment with the young Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), who we now know has a mystical connection to Eywa, the Na'vi god. "Your goddess has no dominion here," Varang declares before a frightened Kiri.
"Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship," Cameron previously told *Empire*. "She's hardened by that.... She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil."
The filmmaker, who previously released *Avatar* (2009) and *Avatar: The Way of Water* (2022) to global box-office dominance, gave EW further hints at the story in a past D23 interview. "If you think of fire as hatred, anger, violence, that sort of thing, and ash is the aftermath. So what's the aftermath?" he explained of the new movie's title. "Grief, loss, right? And then what does that cause in the future? More violence, more anger, more hatred. It's a vicious cycle. So that's the thinking."

The *Avatar: Fire and Ash* trailer also shows the more peaceful Wind Traders, a Na'vi tribe of air that travel around in massive ships propelled by jellyfish-like sails and pulled by massive floating creatures. (Fans previously saw them rendered in concept art that Disney released.) Members of the Metkayina return, including Cliff Curtis as Tonowari, the chieftain, and Kate Winslet as Ronal, Tonowari's wife and the spiritual leader of the ocean clan.
We also see shots of Jake captured by the RDA and marched through their military base, as well as general scenes of Jake and Neytiri's kids in peril. Spider (Jack Champion), the biological son of Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and the only human son in Jake's tribe, seems to be in danger. After the death of Neteyam (Jamie Flatters) in *The Way of Water*, we're expecting the worst.
*Avatar: Fire and Ash* will release in theaters this Dec. 19.
